故 박건하 군은 지난 1월 달성군 서재리 저수지에서 친구 3명이 물에 빠지자 망설임 없이 뛰어들어 모두를 구조했지만 끝내 스스로는 돌아오지 못한 중학교 1학년 학생이다. 그의 용기와 희생은 지역사회에 깊은 울림을 남겼다.
대구시는 보건복지부에 의사자 지정을 요청해 5월 22일 박 군을 공식 ‘의사자’로 인정받았다. 이에 따라 5월 30일 대구시는 ‘의로운 시민’으로 결정하고 조례에 따라 특별위로금 2천만 원을 지급하기로 했다.
하중환 위원장은 “박 군의 결단과 용기는 우리 사회가 영원히 기억해야 할 진실한 가치”라며 “이 같은 숭고한 희생을 법과 제도로 남겨 공동체가 반드시 예우해야 한다”고 말했다. 또 “이번 첫 사례가 끝이 아니라 모든 생명 지킴이를 위한 지속적인 제도로 자리 잡길 바란다”고 덧붙였다.
2009년 조례 제정 이후 첫 공식 ‘의로운 시민’ 인정 사례인 만큼, 대구시는 앞으로 ‘의로운 시민’ 예우 체계 강화와 추모 사업, 교육 활용 등 후속 기념사업을 추진할 계획이다.
