서산시 동물보호센터, 전국 지자체 벤치마킹 '성지'

충남 서산시 동물보호센터가 2021년 6월 개소 후 4년간 동물 보호·복지 거점으로 확고히 자리매김하며 전국 지자체의 모범이 되고 있다.

서산시 농업기술센터 내 연면적 696㎡, 2층 규모로 건립된 이 센터는 충남도 최초로 시가 직접 운영한다. 1층에는 입소실, 동물병원, 보호실이, 2층에는 유기견 입양 카페와 교육실이 마련되어 있다. 특히 최대 120마리 수용 가능한 보호실과 1,749㎡의 반려동물 놀이터는 동물 복지 향상에 크게 기여하고 있다.

총 10여 명의 직원이 유기 동물 입소부터 보호, 사회화, 입양까지 체계적으로 관리한 결과, 총 780여 마리가 새로운 가족을 만났다. 이러한 성과를 바탕으로 2021년부터 2025년까지 대전, 군산 등 42개 기관 300여 명의 관계자가 견학하며 서산시의 선진 사례를 벤치마킹했다.
