서천읍성, 국가지정문화유산 ‘사적’ 지정 예고

충청남도 서천군 서천읍 군사리에 위치한 ‘서천읍성(舒川邑城)’이 국가지정문화유산 ‘사적’으로 지정 예고됐다. 

국가유산청은 지난 7월 17일자로 이를 고시했으며, 앞으로 30일간의 예고 기간 동안 전문가 및 국민의 의견을 수렴한 뒤 문화유산위원회 심의를 거쳐 최종 지정 여부를 결정할 예정이다.

서천읍성은 조선 세종대(1438~1450년경)에 건립된 연해읍성으로, 금강 하구를 통해 내륙으로 침입하는 왜구에 대비하고자 축조됐다. 총연장 약 1.6km에 이르는 성곽은 모두 석축으로 이루어져 있으며, 산지 지형에 조화롭게 들어선 입체적인 구조와 성벽의 원형이 비교적 온전하게 보존돼 있는 점이 특징이다.
