【브레이크뉴스 경북】진예솔 기자=경북교육청(교육감 임종식)은 여름방학을 맞아 1일과 2일, 북부메이커교육센터(안동)와 남부메이커교육센터(경산)에서 초·중학생 55명을 대상으로 '2025학년도 원어민과 함께하는 영어교실 Science & Math Lab'을 운영한다고 밝혔다.
이 프로그램은 학생들이 수학·과학 중심의 메이커 활동에 몰입하면서 자연스럽게 영어를 접하고 활용할 수 있도록 설계됐다. 체험 중심 활동과 실용 영어교육을 결합해 교육 효과를 극대화한 것이 특징이다.
'Science & Math Lab'은 한국인 교사와 원어민 영어보조교사가 함께 수업을 진행하는 팀티칭 방식으로, 메이커 활동 후 영어로 질문하고 응답하며, 게임, 글쓰기, 발표 등 다양한 후속 활동도 이어진다.
이번 시범 운영에서는 남부센터의 일러스트반과 3D 융합반, 북부센터의 목공반과 로봇반이 마련돼 총 3개 강좌에 55명의 학생이 참여한다.
경북교육청은 단순 암기식 영어 수업에서 벗어나 실제 상황 속에서 영어를 익히는 기회를 제공함으로써 학생들의 언어 감각과 창의적 사고력을 함께 키울 수 있는 교육과정으로 주목받고 있다고 설명했다.
교육청은 이번 시범 운영 결과를 바탕으로 센터 간 협의를 통해 프로그램을 점차 확대하고, 학생들의 수준과 흥미를 반영해 수업 내용을 지속적으로 개선할 계획이다.
임종식 교육감은 “원어민 보조교사와 함께하는 체험 중심 수업을 통해 융합형 영어교육이 가능해졌다”며 “영어 공교육의 효과를 높이고, 학생들에게 더욱 실질적인 교육 경험을 제공하겠다”고 말했다.

Superintendent Lim Jong-sik stated, "Experience-oriented classes with native-speaking teaching assistants have enabled integrated English education. We will enhance the effectiveness of public English education and provide students with more practical educational experiences."
