【브레이크뉴스 경북】진예솔 기자=경북교육청은 영천고등학교가 교육부 ‘전국단위 군인자녀 모집형 자율형 공립고’로 지정됨에 따라 오는 2026학년도부터 남녀공학 체제로 전환하고 전국 학생 모집에 나선다고 19일 밝혔다.
영천고는 기존 남자고등학교에서 남녀공학으로 바뀌며, 전국의 군인 자녀들을 대상으로 특별한 교육과정을 운영한다.
지역 학교가 전국적인 명문고로 성장할 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 기대되지만, 지역 학생들의 진학 기회가 줄어들 수 있다는 우려도 제기됐다.
실제로 영천고가 군인 자녀 66명을 전국 단위로 모집하면서 지역 남학생들의 일반계 진학 정원이 줄어들 가능성이 있었다. 이에 경북교육청은 지난 4월부터 협의회를 열어 대응책을 마련했다.
2026학년도 영천 지역 고교 진학 예정자는 601명으로, 일반계고 568명(군인자녀 모집형 포함), 특성화고 132명, 마이스터고 60명으로 정원이 설정됐다.
특히 지역 남학생들의 진학 기회를 보장하기 위해 영천고 일반전형 2학급과 영동고 6학급, 포은고 1학급의 학급당 정원을 기존 22명에서 24명으로 늘렸다. 반면 여학생은 영천여고, 성남여고, 선화여고 등에서 현행 정원을 유지해도 문제가 없을 것으로 분석됐다.
경북은 도 전체가 단일 학구로 운영돼 학생들이 원하는 고교에 자유롭게 지원할 수 있다. 교육청은 매년 4월과 9월 두 차례 진학 희망 조사를 실시해 최근 3년간의 진학률과 유입률, 계열별 선호도를 종합 분석해 학생 배치 계획을 세우고 있다.
이번 발표 역시 1차 조사 결과를 바탕으로 한 것으로, 하반기 원서 접수 전 수요 변화가 있을 경우 2차 조사와 추가 대책 마련에 나설 계획이다.
임종식 경북교육감은 “영천고가 내년부터 전국단위 군인자녀 모집형 자공고로 새출발한다”며 “시행 첫해 지역 학생들의 혼선을 막기 위해 여건을 충분히 고려해 필요한 대안을 적극 마련하겠다”고 말했다.

The Office of Education conducts a survey of prospective students twice a year, in April and September, to comprehensively analyze the advancement and inflow rates over the past three years and develop student placement plans based on these data.
This announcement is also based on the results of the first survey. If there are any changes in demand before the application period begins in the second half of the year, a second survey and additional measures will be developed.
Gyeongbuk Superintendent of Education Lim Jong-sik said, “Yeongcheon High School will make a fresh start as a nationwide military children’s vocational high school starting next year,” and added, “In order to prevent confusion among local students in the first year of implementation, we will take the circumstances into full consideration and actively prepare necessary alternatives.”
