이재명 대통령이 23일(현지시간) 한·일 정상회담에서 "그 어느 때보다 한·일 간 대화·소통·협력을 통해 얻을 수 있는 게 많은 시기"라고 말했다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 일본 도쿄 총리 관저에서 이시바 시게루 총리와 가진 한·일 정상 확대회담 모두 발언에서 "최근 통상·안보 등 국가 질서가 요동 치고 있기 때문에 가치·질서·체제·이념에서도 비슷한 한·일이 어느 때보다 협력 관계를 강화해야 한다는 생각"이라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "대한민국 대통령이 취임 후 일본을 첫 방문 하는 게 처음"이라며 "대한민국이 한·일 관계를 그만큼 중요하게 생각하고 있다는 걸 양해해주길 바란다"고 했다.
또 "셔틀 외교를 이어가는 차원에서 이시바 총리를 한국으로 초청 후 서울이 아닌 지방에서 만나뵙고 싶다"고 덧붙였다.
앞서 발언한 이시바 총리는 "평화·안전이란 건 적극 움직이지 않으면 얻어지는 게 아니라 생각한다"며 "일·한 경제 강화 발전은 양국 관계뿐 아닌 이 지역 전체 이익이 된다 생각한다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "(한·미·일 협력 강화 관련) 이런 인식을 이 대통령과 공유하고 있다는 걸 대단히 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "한국 대통령이 취임 후 일본을 방문하는 게 한일 수교 60주년이지만 이번이 처음인 걸로 알고 있다"고 했다.
이어 "마음이 든든하고 대단히 좋은 방향으로 실천할 수 있길 바란다"며 "이런 관계를 더 발전시켜 나가길 진심으로 기원한다"고 덧붙였다.
확대 회담에 앞서 양 정상은 오후 4시 55분 부터 약 한시간여간 비공개 소인수 회담을 가졌다.
