포항시청소년상담복지센터 집계에 따르면, 과의존 주의·위험군 청소년은 2023년 278명에서 2024년 458명으로 급증했다. 2025년 상반기에만 이미 389명을 기록해 심각성이 드러났다. 전문가들은 학습·생활 불균형뿐 아니라 정신 건강 악화로 이어질 수 있다며 우려를 제기한다.
특히 SNS를 통한 자살, 마약, 도박 등 유해 환경 노출 위험이 커지면서 사회적 경각심이 요구된다. 센터는 상담·예방 프로그램, 부모 교육, 가족 캠프 등을 운영 중이나 수요에 비해 예산과 인력이 턱없이 부족한 실정이다.
이다영 포항시의원(복지환경위원회)은 최근 센터 현장 간담회에서 “청소년 스마트폰 과의존은 개인의 문제가 아니라 지역사회가 함께 해결해야 할 과제”라며, 읍·면 지역 학교를 직접 찾아가는 ‘찾아가 드림 상담센터(가칭)’ 도입을 제안했다.
김정은 위덕대 사회복지학과 교수도 “청소년 미디어 과의존은 예방·개입·사후관리까지 아우르는 종합 지원체계가 필요하다”며, “포항시가 교육청 및 지역사회와 협력해 실질적 대응 방안을 마련해야 한다”고 강조했다.
포항시청소년상담복지센터 관계자는 “청소년들이 건강하게 성장할 수 있도록 지속적이고 체계적인 지원이 절실하다”며 “지역사회와 시 차원의 관심과 협력이 필요하다”고 호소했다.
