(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 한국농수산식품유통공사(이하 aT)가 지난 23일 전남 나주시 산포초등학교에 한국농어촌공사, 산포농협, 산포면 행정복지센터 등 이전 지역의 공공·민간·지역 기관과 함께 친환경 ‘화이트클로버 생태학습장’을 조성했다고 밝혔다.
aT에 따르면, 이번 사업은 산포초등학교 내 활용도가 낮았던 부지 850㎡에 화이트클로버를 식재해, 학생들이 자연과 교감하며 생태를 배울 수 있는 교육 공간으로 조성하기 위해 마련됐다.
토끼풀로도 알려진 화이트클로버는 콩과의 다년생 식물로, 잔디보다 생육 속도가 빠르고 지면을 촘촘히 덮어 잡초의 성장을 억제하는 역할을 한다.
이로 인해 예초기와 제초제 사용을 줄여 탄소배출을 낮추고 토양·수질오염 예방에 도움을 준다.
또한, 꿀을 생산하는 밀원식물로서 꿀벌 생태계 조성과 생물 다양성 보전에도 기여한다고 알려져 있다.
학생들은 생태학습장에서 식물의 생장 과정과 곤충 등 동물의 생태를 관찰하며 자연의 변화를 직접 체험할 수 있다.
