도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 오는 10월 31일 경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상회의 참석에 앞서 일본 방문을 타진 중인 것으로 전해졌다.
24일(현지시간) 영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 이번 방일이 확정될 시 트럼프 대통령은 오는 10월 4일 퇴임 예정인 이시바 시게루 총리 후임과 첫 대면하게 된다.
'로이터'는 이와 관련해 "트럼프 대통령 방일 시기는 APEC 정상회의 참석을 위한 방한보다 먼저 이뤄질 걸로 예상된다"고 미·일 정부 관계자를 인용해 보도했다.
트럼프 대통령이 이번에 방일할 경우 지난 1월 20일 취임 후 첫 일본 방문이 된다.
일본 '니혼게이자이 신문'은 "미·일 관세 합의를 근거로 경제 외 동맹 관계 심화를 위한 방위 협력 등도 의제가 될 가능성이 있다"고 보도했다.
또 트럼프 대통령은 오는 10월 26∼28일 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르에서 개최되는 아세안(ASEAN·동남아시아국가연합) 정상회의에 참석한다고 안와르 이브라함 말레이시아 총리가 밝힌 바 있다.

According to Reuters on the 24th (local time), if this visit to Japan is confirmed, President Trump will meet for the first time with his successor, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who is scheduled to step down on October 4th.
