【브레이크뉴스 김천】진예솔 기자=배낙호 김천시장이 취임 5개월 만에 공직선거법 위반으로 기소되면서 국민의힘 공천 시스템이 논란의 도마에 올랐다.
1일 대구지검 김천지청은 김천시장 재보궐선거 출마 기자회견 당시 배 시장이 자신의 범죄 이력을 허위로 밝힌 것에 대해 공직선거법상 허위사실공표 혐의로 기소해 재판에 넘겼다.
당선을 목적으로 경력 등에 관해 허위사실을 공표할 경우 5년 이하의 징역 또는 3000만원 이하의 벌금에 처해진다.
앞서 김충섭 전임 시장은 전현직 공무원들을 동원해 거액의 선물을 돌리다 당선무효형을 받아 시장직을 잃었다. 이로 인해 김천 시정에 대혼란이 일어났고 장기간의 시정 공백이 이어졌다.
이에 시민들은 보궐선거에서 국민의힘 후보를 공천하지 말라고 요구했다. 그러나 국민의힘은 이를 저버리고 배 시장을 공천했다.
더불어민주당 경북도당은 2일 논평을 통해 "1995년부터 2002년까지 공금횡령과 근로기준법 위반, 도로교통법 위반, 음주운전 등으로 벌금 총 650만원을 내는 등 각종 범죄 이력이 수두룩한 후보를 김천시민을 대표하는 시장으로 공천한 것은 김천시민을 철저히 무시한 행위"라고 비판했다.
이어 "국민의힘 공천이 곧 당선이라는 오만함의 소치"라며 "그동안 겪었을 김천시민들의 고통은 안중에도 없이 수많은 범죄 이력의 소유자를 시장후보로 공천하고 또다시 공직선거법 위반으로 기소된 것에 대해 국민의힘은 책임을 지고 다시는 이러한 일이 일어나지 않도록 공천시스템을 점검하기 바란다"고 촉구했다.
민주당 경북도당은 "배낙호 김천시장은 김천시민 앞에 즉각 사과하고 재판에 진솔하게 임할 것을 촉구한다"고 덧붙였다.

The Gyeongbuk Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party added, "We urge Gimcheon Mayor Bae Nak-ho to immediately apologize to the citizens of Gimcheon and sincerely participate in the trial."
