서 의원은 “정부가 여객선 안정화 사업에 1338억 원을 투입했지만 섬 주민의 교통권은 여전히 보장되지 않고 있다”며 “운항사들이 정비나 비수기 이유로 운항을 중단할 때, 대체선을 반드시 투입하도록 법제화해야 한다”고 강조했다.
이번 사태로 울릉 관광 산업도 직격탄을 맞게 됐다. 겨울철에도 절경과 해산물로 관광객이 꾸준했던 울릉도는 교통 두절로 숙박·음식·렌터카 등 지역경제 전반이 위축될 전망이다. 지역사회는 “운항사들의 일방적 휴항은 주민의 생존권과 지역경제를 동시에 마비시키는 행위”라며 “정부가 공영제 도입을 서둘러야 한다”고 목소리를 높였다.
