이재명 대통령이 22일(현지시간) 남아프리카공화국 G20(주요20개국) 정상회의 계기로 열린 한·독 정상회담에서 "독일이 어떻게 분단을 극복하고 통일을 이뤄냈는지 대한민국은 거기서 경험으로 배워 그 길을 가야한다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 요하네스버그 엑스포 센터에서 프리드리히 메르츠 독일 총리와 정상회담을 갖고 "독일이 먼저 간 통일이란 길이 있기에 대한민국이 독일 경험을 배울게 많다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "혹시 (독일 통일에) 숨겨놓은 노하우가 있음 꼭 알려주기 바란다"고 했고, 메르츠 총리는 "비밀 노하우는 없다"고 답했다.
메르츠 총리는 "한반도·주변 상황에 많은 관심을 갖고 있고 이웃 북한에 대해서도 궁금한 게 많다"며 "대한민국의 대중국 인식에 대해서도 궁금하다. 왜냐면 대 중국 전략을 현재 고심 중이기 때문이며 한·독 간 여러 분야 경제 협력도 관심있다"고 했다.
또 "한·독 간에 이미 좋은 양자 관계가 있다"며 "매우 강력한 파트너십을 구축하고 있으나 계속 증대되길 바란다"고 밝혔다.
