브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 이재용 삼성전자 회장이 지난 25일 무케시 암바니(Mukesh Ambani) 릴라이언스 인더스트리 회장을 만나 반도체, 통신, 데이터센터, 배터리 등 신사업 분야에 대한 협력 확대 방안을 논의했다.
삼성은 암바니 회장에게 △인공지능(AI) △확장현실(XR) △파운드리 △AI 데이터센터 △차세대 통신 △미래 디스플레이 △클라우드 △배터리 및 ESS △플랜트 건설 및 엔지니어링 등 삼성 계열사들의 다양한 미래 신기술을 소개했다.
인도 최대 기업인 릴라이언스는 화학·유통 중심의 기존 사업을 정보통신(ICT) 분야로 확대하며 사업 구조를 넓혀가고 있다. 향후, 반도체·통신·디스플레이·배터리·EPC(설계/조달/시공) 등 종합 역량을 갖춘 삼성과의 사업 협력 기회가 확대될 것으로 기대된다.
특히, 릴라이언스는 최근 인도에 세계 최대 규모의 AI 데이터센터 건설을 추진하는 등 AI 관련 사업도 확장하고 있어, 삼성전자와 AI 반도체 및 차세대 네트워크 솔루션 등 분야에서 협력 확대가 기대되는 상황이다.
이날 암바니 회장은 삼성전자, 삼성디스플레이, 삼성SDI, 삼성물산, 삼성중공업, 삼성E&A, 삼성인력개발원 등 주요 계열사 경영진으로부터 사업 현황을 소개 받고, 갤럭시XR·마이크로 RGB 디스플레이 등 삼성전자의 신기술을 직접 체험해 보기도 했다.
이 회장과 암바니 회장은 이날 만찬까지 함께 하며, 양사간 전방위 협력 확대 방안을 모색했다.
이 자리에는 노태문 삼성전자 사장, 김우준 삼성전자 네트워크 사업부장, 최주선 삼성SDI 사장, 이준희 삼성SDS 사장, 최성안 삼성중공업 부회장, 오세철 삼성물산 사장, 남궁홍 삼성E&A 사장, 이재언 삼성물산 상사부문 사장 등이 참석했다.
삼성과 릴라이언스는 고 이건희 선대회장 때부터 긴밀한 관계를 유지해 왔으며, 2012년 인도 최대 통신사인 릴라이언스 지오와 4G 네트워크 구축 계약 체결을 계기로 사업 협력을 본격화했다. 양사는 2022년 12월 5G 무선 접속망 장비 공급 계약을 맺기도 했다.
향후, 삼성은 6G 네트워크 장비 공급을 비롯해 AI 데이터센터 구축, 데이터센터의 전력 공급 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 ESS (Energy Storage System) 배터리 등 다양한 분야에서 릴라이언스와 협력을 강화할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
이 회장과 암바니 회장이 만난 것은 2024년 7월 인도 뭄바이에서 열린 암바니 회장의 막내 아들 아난트 암바니의 결혼식 이후 약 1년 4개월만이다.
앞서 이 회장은 2018년에는 암바니 회장의 장녀 이샤 암바니의 결혼식에, 2019년에는 장남 아카시 암바니의 결혼식에 참석했다. 암바니 회장의 자녀 결혼식에 모두 초청받은 한국 기업인은 이 회장이 유일했다.
한편, 이 회장은 오랜 기간 축적한 폭넓은 글로벌 네트워크를 활용해 삼성의 미래 먹거리와 신사업 개척에 앞장서고 있다.
이 회장은 지난 10월에는 젠슨황 엔비디아 CEO, 샘 올트먼 오픈AI CEO 등과 만나 AI 팩토리 구축, 차세대 메모리·파운드리 공급, AI-RAN 등 전방위 분야에서 글로벌 AI 기업들과의 협력 확대를 주도했다.

또한, 이 회장은 세계 4위 완성차 업체인 스텔란티스 존 엘칸 회장과도 막역한 사이로, 엘칸 회장의 제의로 스텔란티스의 모회사 ‘엑소르’의 사외이사를 5년간 맡기도 했다.
이 회장은 화이자·로슈·BMS·아스트라제네카 등 글로벌 제약사 경영진과도 수시로 교류하며 삼성의 바이오 사업에 힘을 보태고 있다.
