울릉군은 최근 울릉읍 일원에 조성된 LPG 저장소 내 저장탱크에 대규모 액화석유가스(LPG)를 주입하는 첫 충전 공정을 성공적으로 마쳤다고 6일 밝혔다. 이번 충전은 배관망 공급 개시를 위한 필수 절차로, 본격적인 가스 공급을 앞둔 중요한 단계다.
그동안 울릉도 주민들은 개별 LPG 용기를 직접 배달받아 사용하는 방식에 의존해 왔다. 이로 인해 기상 악화 시 공급 중단 위험이 컸고, 육지보다 높은 연료비 부담을 감수해야 하는 불편을 겪어왔다.
배관망 구축사업이 완료되면 기존 용기 사용 방식 대비 연료비 절감 효과가 기대되며, 노출된 가스통 대신 지하 매설 배관을 통해 가스를 공급해 안전성도 크게 강화될 전망이다. 또한 도시가스 수준의 안정적인 공급과 계량기 방식의 검침 체계를 도입해 주민들의 생활 편의가 한층 개선될 것으로 보인다.
울릉군은 총 330억 원의 사업비가 투입된 이번 사업을 통해 이달부터 순차적으로 약 1,380가구에 LPG 공급을 시작할 계획이다. 현재는 세대별 보일러 설치 상태와 배관 연결 여부 등에 대한 최종 안전 점검이 진행 중이다.
울릉군 관계자는 “기상 악화 때마다 가스 배달을 걱정해야 했던 주민들의 오랜 불편이 이번 배관망 구축으로 해소될 것”이라며 “첫 가스 충전이 성공적으로 이뤄진 만큼 남은 안전 점검을 철저히 마쳐 사고 없는 공급이 이루어지도록 하겠다”고 말했다.
한편 울릉군은 주민들과의 소통 강화를 위해 오는 1월 15일 한국엘피지사업관리원과 공동으로 주민설명회를 개최할 예정이다. 설명회에서는 사업 추진 현황과 공급 방식 등을 안내하고 주민 의견을 수렴할 계획이다.
