나는 며칠 전 한동훈 국민의힘 전 대표 자신의 정치적 과오를 솔직히 사과하고, 당은 징계의 칼을 빼지 말라고 말한 바 있다. 그러나 한동훈은 거꾸로 당무감사위원회를 고발하고, 당은 기어이 칼을 빼들었다.
불행한 일이지만, 이것이 우리 정당정치의 수준이다. 정당은 법을 집행하는 행정부나 법을 해석하는 사법부와 달리 법을 만드는 정치집단이다. 정당을 움직이는 메커니즘은 법의 방정식이 아니라 여론의 방정식이다.
국힘 지도부는 그 수준에 맞추어 주사위를 던졌다. 되돌릴 방도는 없다. 자칭 보수언론들이 일제히 지도부를 성토하지만, 거기에 굴복하면 당은 무너져내릴 것이다. 언론의 비판에 귀를 기울이지만, 언론집단에 끌려가면 길은 막히게 되어 있다.
그러므로 국힘 지도부는 심기 일전하여 이재명독재와 더 결연히 투쟁하라! 광범위한 통합과 연대의 전략을 실천하라! 지방선거 승리의 길은 다른 곳에 있지 않다. 강력한 투쟁으로 이재명지지율을 40% 밑으로 끌어내려야 한다.

한동훈은 이제 국민의힘을 잊고 이재명과의 투쟁에 몰두하면 된다. 그렇게 의연한 모습으로 대의를 위해 헌신하면, 등을 돌린 민심도 돌아올 수 있을 것이다. 배가 물이 없으면 항해할 수 없듯이, 정치인은 여론 없이 정치를 할 수 없다. 민심이 돌아오지 않고 그가 재기할 길이 어디에 있겠는가?
