변지량 국민의힘 춘천시장 후보 예정자는 20일 논평을 통해 "단식 6일차인 장동혁 대표는 이날 오후부터 산소포화도가 위험 수치 이하로 낮아져 의료진이 의료기관 긴급 이송을 권고했으나, 본인의 거부 의사로 의료용 산소발생기를 활용해 단식현장에서 긴급 조치 중임을 알려드린다"며 매우 위급한 상황에 처해 있음을 전했다.
그는 이어 "민주당 정청래 대표가 국민의힘 장동혁 대표의 단식에 '밥 먹고 싸우라'는 발언을 내놓았다"며 "단식의 결기와 고통에, 이를 조롱하는 발언은 정치인으로서의 상식과 공감 능력을 의심케 한다"고 충고했다.
무엇보다 "장 대표의 단식은 이미 드러난 통일교의 정치 개입, 정치의 뿌리까지 흔들고 있는 뇌물공천 의혹에 대한 진상규명을 요구하는 정치적 절규다"며 "이는 고름을 짜내듯 일시적 아픔이 따른다 해도, 여야를 떠나 우리 정치가 반드시 풀어야 할 숙제다"고 분명히 했다.

아울러 "필요할 때는 늘 ‘선출직’을 앞세우던 민주당이 아니었던가"라며 "정치를 바로잡자는 단식을 조롱하고 국민적 수사 요구에는 ‘모르쇠’로 일관하고 있으니, 과연 어떤 국민이 납득하겠는가?"라고 꼬집었다.
