시대의 양심, 월파 서민호 선생 서거 51주년 추념 학술대회 개최

시대의 양심이자, 타협 없는 개혁가로 기억되는 월파 서민호 선생 서거 51주년 추념 학술대회가 민병덕 의원실 주최, (사)국회출입기자협회 주관으로 지난 20일 국회의원회관 제1소회의실에서 개최됐다.
이날 행사는 정대철 헌정회장, 허신행 전 장관, 박준영 전 전남지사를 비롯한 정·관계 인사와 월파 기념사업회 송기철 사무국장, 박병섭 역사연구가, 김대진 고흥향우회 고문 등 월파 서민호 선생의 헌정사적 업적을 기리는 각계각층의 시민들이 참석한 가운데 진행됐다.
정대철 헌정회장은 대회사를 통해 "월파 서민호 선생을 흠모하고 존경한다"며 "그는 몸바쳐서 항일독립운동에 투신했으며, 용기 있는 민주화투쟁가, 애민애족의 통일운동가, 고향을 사랑하는 애향가, 교육운동가로서 시대적 과제 앞에 비굴하지 않았던 인물”이라고 소개했다. 또한 서민호 선생과 정 회장 선친인 정일영 박사와의 호형호재 교류 등 일화에 대해서도 공개했다.
이후 열린 토론회에서는 발제를 맡은 김만호 교수(선문대) 진행으로 허신행 전 장관, 이영호 DJ정치학교장 등이 월파의 생애를 조망했다.
월파 서민호 선생은 1903년 전남 고흥에서 태어났다. 일본 와세다대 정경학과를 졸업했으며, 미국 컬럼비아대 대학원에서 정치학 석사 학위를 취득했다. 일제강점기 시절 조선어학회 사건으로 투옥되기도 하였다.
해방 이후 초대 광주시장, 전남지사 및 4선 국회의원을 역임했다. 1974년 1윌 24일 서거했으며, 2001년 건국훈장 애족장이 추서됐다.

Commemorative Academic Conference Held to Commemorate the 51st Anniversary of the Passing of Wolpa Seo Min-ho, the Conscience of Our Times

The 51st anniversary commemorative academic conference commemorating the passing of Wolpa Seo Min-ho, remembered as the conscience of our times and an uncompromising reformer, was held on the 20th in the first conference room of the National Assembly Members' Hall, hosted by the office of Representative Min Byeong-deok and organized by the National Assembly Correspondents' Association.
The event was attended by political and government figures, including Jeong Dae-cheol, President of the Constitutional Society; former Minister Heo Shin-haeng; and former South Jeolla Province Governor Park Joon-young. The event also brought together citizens from all walks of life, including Song Ki-cheol, Secretary General of the Wolpa Memorial Association; historical researcher Park Byeong-seop; and Kim Dae-jin, Advisor to the Goheung Association, to commemorate the constitutional achievements of Wolpa Seo Min-ho.
In his opening address, Jeong Dae-cheol, chairman of the Constitutional Council, stated, "I admire and respect Mr. Seo Min-ho of Wolpa." He added, "He devoted himself to the anti-Japanese independence movement. He was a courageous fighter for democracy, a reunification activist who loved his people and his country, a patriot who loved his hometown, and an education activist who was undeterred by the challenges of his time." He also shared anecdotes about the close friendship between Mr. Seo and Dr. Jeong Il-yeong, the late chairman's father.
In the subsequent discussion, moderated by Professor Kim Man-ho of Sunmoon University, former Minister Heo Shin-haeng and DJ Political School Dean Lee Young-ho reflected on Wolpa's life.
Mr. Seo Min-ho of Wolpa was born in Goheung, South Jeolla Province, in 1903. He graduated from the Department of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University in Japan and earned a master's degree in political science from Columbia University in the United States. He was imprisoned during the Japanese colonial period in connection with the Korean Language Society Incident.
After liberation, he served as the first mayor of Gwangju, governor of South Jeolla Province, and a four-term member of the National Assembly. He passed away on January 24, 1974, and was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal, in 2001.
