경북국방벤처센터는 2월 12일 현판식을 열고 광역 단위 국방산업 지원체계 구축을 공식화했다. 이날 행사에는 경상북도 경제부지사와 구미시 부시장 등 관계자 40여 명이 참석해 센터의 새로운 출발을 함께했다.
구미국방벤처센터는 2014년 3월 개소 이후 11년간 구미 소재 중소·벤처기업 103개사와 협약을 체결하고, 국방시장 진입과 방산 협력을 집중 지원해 왔다. 그 결과 누적 국방 매출 1조 6천억 원, 일자리 1천 개 창출이라는 성과를 거두며 지역 방산 생태계 기반을 다져왔다.
이날 행사에서는 경북국방벤처센터 현판식과 함께 2026년 도내 신규 협약기업 19개사와의 협약 체결도 진행됐다. 이어 올해 사업계획과 방산육성 지원사업을 소개하고, 방위사업청의 방산기업 지원정책을 안내하는 등 도내 기업들의 방산 분야 진입과 성장을 위한 정보를 공유했다.
또한 협약기업 간담회를 통해 현장의 애로사항을 청취하고, 지역 국방산업 경쟁력 강화와 중소기업 육성 방안에 대한 의견을 나누는 시간도 마련됐다.
정성현 구미시 부시장은 “구미국방벤처센터는 그동안 지역 중소·벤처기업의 방산 분야 진입에 중요한 역할을 해왔다”며 “경북국방벤처센터로의 확대를 계기로 구미와 함께 도내 방산 생태계 활성화에 더욱 큰 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
한편 구미시는 국방벤처센터 운영을 비롯해 2023년 4월 ‘국방 유·무인복합체계 방산혁신클러스터’ 조성, 2023년 7월 ‘반도체 국가첨단전략산업 특화단지’ 지정 등 방산·반도체 산업 기반을 강화해 왔다. 시는 이번 확대 개편을 발판으로 경북 방산 생태계 활성화와 기업 성장 지원에 더욱 속도를 낼 방침이다.

Since its opening in March 2014, the Gumi Defense Venture Center has signed agreements with 103 SMEs and venture companies in Gumi over the past 11 years, focusing on supporting their entry into the defense market and cooperation in the defense industry. As a result, the center has achieved cumulative defense sales of KRW 1.6 trillion and created 1,000 jobs, solidifying the foundation of the regional defense industry ecosystem.

Furthermore, a meeting with participating companies was held to hear about their challenges and share ideas on ways to strengthen the competitiveness of the local defense industry and foster SMEs.
Gumi Deputy Mayor Jeong Seong-hyeon stated, "The Gumi Defense Venture Center has played a crucial role in fostering the entry of local SMEs and venture companies into the defense industry. With its expansion into the Gyeongbuk Defense Venture Center, we anticipate it will play an even greater role in revitalizing the provincial defense industry ecosystem, working with Gumi."
Meanwhile, Gumi City has been strengthening its defense and semiconductor industry foundation through initiatives such as operating the Defense Venture Center, establishing the "Defense Innovation Cluster for Manned and Unmanned Complex Systems" in April 2023, and designating the "Semiconductor National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex" in July 2023. The city plans to use this expansion and reorganization as a springboard to further accelerate the revitalization of the Gyeongbuk defense ecosystem and support for corporate growth.
