이번 사업은 협소하고 노후화된 기존 보훈회관을 새롭게 건립해 분산돼 있는 보훈단체를 한곳으로 모아 단체 운영의 효율성을 높이고 보훈단체와 보훈가족의 예우와 편의를 강화하기 위해 추진됐다.
신축되는 보훈회관은 올해 11월 준공을 목표로 총사업비 37억 원(국비 5억 원, 특조금 10억 원, 군비 22억 원)을 투입해 지상 3층, 연면적 982.05㎡ 규모로 건립되며, 시설에는 대회의실과 다목적실, 프로그램실 등 보훈단체 활동과 교류를 위한 공간으로 조성된다.
보훈회관에는 △상이군경회 △전몰군경유족회 △전몰군경미망인회 △무공수훈자회 △6.25참전유공자회 △월남전참전자회 △고엽제전우회 △특수임무유공자회 등 8개 보훈단체 사무실이 마련된다.
최재형 보은군수는 “보훈단체와 보훈가족 모두가 기다려온 숙원사업인 만큼 국가를 위해 헌신하신 분들께 합당한 예우와 편의를 제공하기 위해 추진하게 됐다”며 “보훈가족 한 분 한 분이 편안하게 이용할 수 있는 품격 있는 공간으로 조성하겠다”고 말했다.
