지난 3월23일 밤, 아내와 함께 넷플릭스를 통해 라이브로 방영된 BTS광화문공연을 보았다. 구름같은 인파를 예상했으나 그 규모가 너무 조촐해 놀랐다. 아내가 감흥(感興)이 일지 않는다고 아쉬워했다. 우리와 세대차이가 크잖아, 내가 그렇게 아내를 달랬다. 그 공연을 두고 많은 비판이 쏟아지고 있다. 주최측인 웨이브가 공식 사과까지 한다. 주로 지나친 통제가 문제였다. 음악은 그 자체가 자유다. 공연장의 분위기도 자유로워야 한다. 따지고 보면 과잉통제를 한 당국자들이 사과해야 한다.
BTS는 4년 전 그 절정기에서 멈춰섰다. 주로 멤버들의 군복무 때문이었다. 안타깝지만 아름다운 이별이었다. 그러다 다시 완전체가 되어 새로운 시작을 알리는 순간이었다. 우리의 자랑이자 세계인들의 기쁨이다. 공연행사에 불미스런 문제가 있었지만, 이 위대한 출발을 축복하는 것이 마땅하다. 특히 정치적 관점은 털어버려야 한다. 이재명정권이 그 공연을 어떻게 이용하려했는지 묻거나 따질 것도 없다. BTS는 정치를 뛰어넘는 우리문화의 상징적 존재다.
역사를 돌이켜 보자. 봉건시대 사회를 지배하는 힘은 정치와 종교였다. 그리고 산업혁명 이후 정치와 경제가 서로 견제하면서 사회를 지배했다. 그러나 현대에 이르러 마침내 문화의 세기가 열렸다. 이제 문화가 사회를 지배하는 힘으로 등장했다. 이른바 문화권력이 정치권력이나 경제권력을 압도하기 시작했다.
이는 돌이킬 수 없는 추세다. 티지털혁명으로 세계는 더 빠르고 넓게 하나가 된다. BTS공연이 190개국에 동시 생중계되어 세계인이 함께 춤추고 감동하는 시대다. 어떤 정치권력, 어떤 경제 권력이 그런 힘을 가질 수 있을까!
우리 젊은 세대들도 정치경제적 갈등보다 사회문화적 갈등으로 더 고통 받고 있다. 그들은 세계관, 가치관의 정체성을 문화에서 찾으려 한다. 우리 기성세대가 젊은 세대의 정체성 혁명을 도와주어야 한다. 문화를 융성시키는 일에 더 열렬히 응원하고 더 많은 투자를 해야 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.
나는 이런 마음으로 BTS공연을 보며 뜨거운 박수를 보냈다. 그들이 세계를 돌며 우리 문화의 힘으로 진정한 사랑과 평화의 에너지를 폭발시켜주기 바란다. 문화대국 대한민국 만세!
