기업인에게 기업은 자신의 생명만큼 소중하다. 포악한 정치권력은 마음만 먹으면 기업을 죽일 수 있다. 그래서 기업인은 정치권력 앞에서는 한 없이 작아진다.
쌍방울 부회장 방용철이 4월14일 국회 청문회 증언대에 섰다. 그런데 그는 이 살벌한 분위기에 주눅들지 않고, 진실을 그대로 또박또박 진술했다. 민주당 법사위원장이 거듭 위증하지 말라고 위협해도 꿈쩍하지 않았다.
민주당은 비수에 찔리는 충격을 받았을 것이다. 무슨 배짱으로 그를 불러냈는지 모른다. 최소한 그가 민주당과 이재명에게 불리한 진술은 하지 못할 것이라는 믿음이 있었을 것이다. 그러나 방용철은 전 국민이 보는 앞에서 진실을 그대로 말하는 용기를 보여주었다.
방용철은 2019. 7 필리핀 마닐라 한 호텔에서 북의 대남공작원 리호남을 만났다. 그를 쌍방울 회장 김성태의 방으로 안내했다. 김성태는 이재명의 방북비용으로 준비한 70만 달러를 그에게 주었다.
방용철의 증언은 진실이다. 그는 기업인으로서 자신은 물론 기업에 대한 권력의 위협을 감수하고 경험한 사실을 진술했기 때문이다.

이재명과 민주당은 이 청문회가 끝나면 특별검사를 임명해 그로 하여금 이재명에 대한 공소를 취소하려 한다. 특검은 권력의 부패와 불법을 수사하고 처벌하기 위한 제도다. 그런데 권력자의 범죄를 덮어주기 위해 특검제도를 남용하려 하다니 기가 막힌다.
우리 헌정사에서 이런 만행은 없었다. 다른 선진국에서도 물론이다. 자신이 결백하다면서 왜 재판을 중단시키는가? 왜 더 나아가 재판 자체를 없애려 하는가? 더 늦기 전에 멈추기 바란다.
진실은 세상을 밝게 비추는 빛과 같다. 그래서 진실을 말하는 용기는 아름답다. 특히 권력의 위협에 맞서 차분하게 진실을 말하는 한 기업인의 모습은 더 아름답다. 그에게 박수를 보낸다.
