브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 홍콩 사우스차이나모닝포스트(SCMP)는 7일 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 치료에 싱가포르 환자의 혈장을 활용한 항체치료제가 사용됐다고 보도했다.
사우스차이나모닝포스트는 전날 출간된 '아시아 과학 매거진'을 인용해 트럼프 대통령 치료에 쓰인 항체치료제 중 하나는 싱가포르 환자 3명의 혈액 샘플을 활용한 'REGN-COV2'라고 전했다.
아시아 과학 매거진도 트럼프 대통령이 월터리드 군병원에 입원하기 이전인 지난 2일 많은 양의 REGN-COV2를 투여받았다고 전했다.
REGN-COV2는 미국 제약회사 리제네론이 개발 중인 항체치료제로 알려져 있다. 항체치료제는 코로나19에서 회복한 환자들의 혈장을 이용하기 때문에 코로나19 예방이나 치료에 도움이 될 수 있지만 대량의 혈장 수급이 사실상 불가능하기 때문에 대규모 인원을 위한 치료제는 될 수 없다.
리제네론은 미국의 코로나19 환자 275명을 대상으로 임상시험을 진행한 결과 증상 완화와 바이러스 개체 수 감소가 확인됐다고 밝힌 바 있다. 다만 리제네론은 아직까지 미국 식품의약국(FDA)로부터 REGN-COV2 긴급 사용 승인을 받지 못했다.
한편, 코로나19에서 회복한 환자들의 혈장은 지난 6월부터 한국, 중국, 일본, 싱가포르 등 아시아 국가들 사이에서 코로나19 치료 및 예방에 사용됐다.
