브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 정부 관용차를 미국에서 생산된 전기차로 바꾸겠다고 밝혔다.
25일(현지시간) CNBC에 따르면 바이든 대통령은 연방정부 기관이 물품이나 서비스를 조달할 때 미국산을 우선으로 하는 '미국산 구매(Buy American·바이 아메리칸)' 행정명령에 서명했다.
바이든 대통령은 이 자리에서 정부기관의 자동차나 트럭 등을 미국에서 만들어진 전기차로 교체하겠다는 구상을 밝혔다.
다만 구체적인 내용은 밝히지 않아 다양한 해석이 나오고 있다.
바이든 대통령은 "넷제로(Net Zero·탄소 순배출량 제로)인 전기차"로의 교체를 얘기하면서 전환 기간은 명시하지 않았다. 이번 계획이 미국 자동차 업계에서 새 일자리 100만개가 창출되도록 도울 것이라고만 밝혔다.
이어 행정명령에선 정부가 구입한 차량에서 미국산 부품이 차지하는 비중이 커져야 한다고 요구했다. 현재 기준에 따르면 관용차량 부품 중 적어도 50%이상이 미국산이어야 한다.
바이든 대통령은 "50% 문턱은 충분히 높지 않다"면서 "기업들은 더 많은 미국산 부품을 사용해야 한다"고 강조했다.
한편, 이같은 행정명령에 대해 미국 내 전기차 제조업체들은 환영의 뜻을 밝혔다. 현재 미국에서 전기차를 조립하는 기업은 테슬라와 GM, 닛산자동차 정도다.
제너럴모터스(GM)는 이날 성명을 통해 "미국 제조업을 지원하겠다는 바이든 대통령의 약속은 고무적"이라며 "행정명령의 세부사항을 검토할 수 있기를 기대한다"고 밝혔다.
포드 역시 "미국, 미국인, 미국 상품 및 서비스에 대한 투자는 국가적 임무라고 믿는다"고 말했다.

U.S. President Joe Biden has announced that he will replace government vehicles with electric vehicles made in the United States.
According to CNBC on the 25th (local time), President Biden signed an executive order of ``Buy American'' that prioritizes U.S. when federal agencies procure goods or services.
At this meeting, President Biden announced his plan to replace cars and trucks of government agencies with electric vehicles made in the United States.
However, various interpretations are coming out because specific details are not disclosed.
President Biden talked about the replacement of an electric vehicle with "Net Zero", but did not specify the transition period. It only said that the plan would help create 1 million new jobs in the US auto industry.
He then demanded that under the executive order, the share of American-made parts in vehicles purchased by the government should be increased. According to current standards, at least 50% of the parts of the public vehicle must be made in the United States.
"The 50% threshold is not high enough," said President Biden. "Companies should use more US-made parts."
Meanwhile, electric vehicle manufacturers in the United States expressed their welcome to the executive order. Currently, Tesla, GM and Nissan Motors are the only companies that assemble electric vehicles in the US.
General Motors (GM) said in a statement that day, "President Biden's promise to support the US manufacturing industry is encouraging," and "I look forward to reviewing the details of the administrative order."
"We believe that investing in the United States, Americans and American goods and services is a national mission," Ford said.
