대통령 선거가 가까이 오면서, 선거 때라서인지 전직 대통령이 불려 나오고 있다. 우리나라 첫 진보 대통령이랄 수 있는 김대중 전 대통령도 마찬가지이다. 이런 시점에서 필자가 “나는 김대중 전 대통령(1924-2009)의 최다(最多) 인터뷰어”라고 주장하니까, 더러 어떤 분들은 “정말?”이냐고 묻는 분들이 있다.
이에 대한 답을 도출하기 위해 나의 소개가 필요하다. 필자는 뉴욕 세계신보-토요신문-일요서울-주간현대-사건의 내막 등의 주간신문에 근무하면서 편집국장(뉴욕 세계신보에서는 편집 부국장)을 지냈다. 일간 '펜 그리고 자유(타블로이드 일간신문)'에서도 편집국장을 지냈다. 아마 20여년 이상 편집국장 자리에 머물렀다. 이처럼, 아주 길어진 이유는 주간현대와 일간 펜 그리고 자유는 필자가 오너였기 때문에, 장기간 편집국장을 할 수 있었다.
김대중 전 대통령이 야당 총재시절, 그리고 대통령이 됐을 때까지 인터뷰가 이어졌다. 그 이유는 야당 총재-대통령 시절의 인터뷰는 신문사의 편집국장 정도가 하는 게 예의였다. 오랜 기간, 이 신문 저 신문의 편집국장으로 재직하다보니 그런 행운이 만들어졌다. 본격적인 인터뷰는 3시간 정도씩 해야만 깊이 있는 인터뷰가 가능하다. 그런, 인터뷰의 행운이 뒤따랐다.
회고하면 필자는 김대중의 장학생(獎學生)이었다. 김대중 전 대통령은 한국의 민주주의-남북한의 화해 등의 확고한 정치적 노선을 걸었다. 필자 역시 그런 노선의 혜택(惠澤)을 확실하게 본 사람이다. 주간신문-일간신문-인터넷신문에서 그런 노선을 추종해왔기 때문이다. 주간-일간 신문사의 오너로서 판매 전성기 때 김대중 노선을 따름으로써 언론사업의 성공도 이어졌다.
필자는 김대중식 민주주의의 추종자였다. 한국의 많은 기업들은 김대중이 안착시킨 민주주의라는 정치체제가 만든 건실한 열매를 따먹고 있다. 이는 항구적(恒久的)이다. 한국의 민주주의는 동북아시아에서 가장 앞선 정치체제이다. 무한 자유와 모든 인간 사이의 평등이 넘실댄다. 기업이 김대중 노선을 따르면 번성할 수 있다. 이런 이유로, 대한민국의 기업들에도 김대중 장학생들이 많을 것이라는 게 필자의 주장이다.
김대중 대통령은 1998년 2월26일 서울 영등포구 국회의사당 뜰에서 취임식(15대 대통령)을 가졌다. 취임사에서 정보화 시대를 언급했다. 김대중 전 대통령은 취임사에서 “세계는 지금 유형의 자원이 경제발전의 요소였던 산업사회로부터 무형의 지식과 정보가 경제발전의 원동력이 되는 지식정보사회로 나아가고 있습니다. 정보화혁명은 세계를 하나의 지구촌으로 만들어 국민경제시대로부터 세계경제시대로의 전환을 이끌고 있습니다. 정보화 시대는 누구나, 언제나, 어디서나 손쉽고 값싸게 정보를 얻고 이용할 수 있는 시대를 말합니다”면서 “이는 민주사회에서만 가능합니다. 우리는 이와 같은 문명사적 대전환기를 맞아 새로운 도전에 전력을 다해 능동적으로 대응해야 합니다”고 피력했다. 정보화시회=민주사회를 천명한 것.
이어 “정치개혁이 선행돼야 합니다. 국민이 주인대접을 받고 주인역할을 하는 참여민주주의가 실현돼야 하겠습니다. 그래야만 국정이 투명하게 되고 부정부패도 사라집니다. 저는 '국민에 의한 정치' '국민이 주인되는 정치' 를 국민과 함께 반드시 이뤄내겠다는 것을 약속하고 다짐하는 바입니다”면서 “'국민의 정부' 는 어떠한 정치보복도 하지 않겠습니다. 어떠한 차별과 특혜도 용납하지 않겠습니다. 다시는 무슨 지역 정권이니 무슨 도 (道) 차별이니 하는 말이 없도록 하겠다는 것을 굳게 다짐합니다”고 강조했다.
김대중 전 대통령은 이미 1998년에 정보화 시대의 도래(到來)를 예견했다.
