브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 정용진 신세계그룹 부회장이 쏘아올린 '멸공' 발언 논란으로, 신세계 그룹주 시가총액이 2000억원여 넘게 증발했다. 재벌가의 말 한마디가 회사 주가뿐 아니라 사회에 얼마나 큰 영향력이 있는지 보여주는 또 하나의 사례가 되고 있다.
11일 한국거래소에 따르면 지난 10일 유가증권시장에서 신세계는 1만7000원(6.8%) 하락한 23만3000원에 마감했다.
신세계 주가가 하루만에 6% 이상 급락한 것은 지난 2020년 8월 16일 -8.7%를 기록한 이후 약 1년 5개월만이다. 이에 따라 신세계 시가총액은 2조4613억원에서 2조2939억원으로 1674억원 줄었다.
신세계인터내셔날도 7500원(-5.34%) 내린 13만3000원에 마감했다. 중국에서 면세, 화장품 사업을 진행하고 있는 신세계인터내셔날은 정유경 신세계 총괄사장이 대주주로 있는 백화점 계열임에도 정용진 부회장 발언으로 인해 대 중국 사업에 차질이 있을 것이란 우려 탓에 덩달아 내렸다.
다른 그룹 계열사들도 줄줄이 하락했다. 신세계 I&C, 신세계푸드 등이 3% 안팎의 하락세를 나타냈으며 광주신세계도 0.85% 내렸다. 이마트 0.34%, 신세계건설 3.84% 등 일부 회사들은 소폭 상승 마감했지만, 신세계 그룹주를 통틀어 보면 하루 새 약 2400억원에 달하는 시총이 증발했다.
하락세는 11일에도 다소 이어지고 있다. 이날 오후 1시 10분 기준 신세계인터내셔날은 0.38% 하락한 132500원, 신세계I&C는 2.99% 하락한 178500원, 신세계푸드 2.3%하락한 76300원, 이마트 147000원(-1.34%), 신세계건설 38300원(-2.3%)를 기록 중이다. 신세계만 2.58% 오른 23만9000원으로 선방하고 있다.
특히 정 부회장의 발언이 정치권 논쟁으로까지 번지면서 파급력은 점차 커지고 있다. 일부 네티즌들은 '보이콧 정용진, 가지 않습니다. 사지 않습니다'라는 제목의 포스터를 만들고 불매운동까지 조장하고 있다. 일부 네티즌들은 정용진 부회장이 최대주주로 있는 이마트와 계열사 실적을 분석하며 매출의 상당부분을 차지하고 있는 스타벅스를 불매운동의 표적으로 삼아야 한다는 선동까지 하고 있다.
반대로 '분단국에서 멸공을 언급하는 게 무슨 문제냐'며 정 부회장의 발언을 지지하는 네티즌들도 자신의 생각을 공유하며 '반대로 돈쭐 내러 이마트를 방문하겠다'고 옹호하는 등 온라인에선 각축전이 벌어졌다.
이처럼 사태가 일파만파 커지자 정용진 부회장은 더이상 멸공을 언급하지 않겠다는 의사를 주변에 밝힌 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 정치권까지 번져버린 멸공 논란을 잠재우기까지는 다소 시간이 걸릴 것이라는 게 업계의 기본적인 시각이다.
한편 정 부회장은 지난 2일 자신의 인스타그램에 숙취해소제 사진과 함께 "새해에는 이거 먹고 끝까지 살아남을 것이다. 멸공"이라고 올렸고, 이후 젓갈 사진과 함께 "새해 첫 젖갈, 멸공"이라고 적으며 논란이 시작됐다.
이에 인스타그램측에서 이 글을 삭제하자, 정 부회장은 "이게 왜 폭력 선동이냐. 끝까지 살아남을테다. 멸공"이라고 적고 항의했다. 인스타그램측에선 '시스템 오류'라며 다시 게시글을 복구해주긴 했으나, 이후 정 부회장은 더욱 적극적으로 멸공이라는 단어를 사용했다.
정 부회장은 특히 지난 6일에는 '한국이 안하무인인 중국에 항의 한 번 못한다'는 제목으로 대북 정책을 비판하는 내용의 기사를 게시하며 시진핑 중국 주석의 사진을 함께 남겼다. 해시태그로는 #멸공 #승공통일 #반공반첩 이라고 달았다.
정 부회장은 중국측에서 문제삼을 것을 의식했는지 시진핑 주석 사진을 김정은 북한 국무위원장 사진으로 교체하고 '자신의 멸공이 중국과는 아무런 상관이 없다'고 해명하기도 했으나 이미 논란은 촉발되기 시작했다.
