브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 정청래 더불어민주당 의원의 불교계 발언 후폭풍이 계속되고 있다.
조응천 민주당 의원은 20일 불교계와 갈등을 일으킨 정청래 의원을 향해 "지금처럼 선당후사가 필요한 때가 언제인가"라며 사실상 공개적으로 탈당을 촉구했다.
조 의원은 이날 CBS라디오 '김현정의 뉴스쇼'에 출연해 "이핵관 얘기까지 페이스북에 올리신 걸 보고 의아스러웠다"면서 "솔직히 차마 말은 못 하지만 마음 속으로 정 의원이 자진해서 탈당해 줬으면 하는 의원 분들이 주위에 많을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
그는 "(탈당은) 억울한 점이 많겠지만 불교계가 요구하는 점 중에 하나"라며 "공개적으로 자기 한 사람을 지목해서 자꾸 사퇴하라 계속 연이어 나오고 있는데 얼마나 괴롭겠나. 제가 그렇게 된다면 되게 민망하고 괴로울 것 같다"고 했다.
정 의원은 지난해 10월 국회 문화체육관광위원회의 문화재청 국정감사에서 해인사 ‘문화재구역 입장료’를 ‘통행세’로 지칭하고, 전통사찰을 ‘봉이 김선달’이라고 표현해 불교계로부터 비난을 받은 바 있다. 정 의원은 뒤늦게 사과했으나 불교계는 이를 받아들이지 않고 여전히 강경한 입장이다.

당 지도부는 대선에 악영향을 끼칠까 노심초사하며 송영길 당 대표를 비롯한 당 지도부, 이재명 후보 후원회장인 정세균 전 국무총리, 이원욱 국회 정각회장 등이 불교계를 찾아가 연신 사과했지만 그들의 화를 잠재우진 못했다.
여기에 더해 정청래 의원은 지난 18일 자신의 SNS에 "이핵관(이재명 핵심 관계자)이 찾아와 이재명 후보의 뜻이라며 불교계가 심상치 않으니 자진 탈당하는 게 어떠냐고 했다"고 전하며 "내 사전엔 탈당과 이혼은 없다고 단호하게 거절하고 돌려보냈다"고 또 한번 논란이 될 발언을 했다.
이에 김종민 민주당 의원은 라디오에 출연해 "윤핵관(윤석열 핵심 관계자)과 이핵관은 분명히 다르다"면서 "'윤핵관'은 '핵심'이라는 관계 때문에 그 사람이 공식적인 직위나 역할과 관계없이 영향력을 발휘하고, 이준석 국민의힘 대표도 무시한 것이 문제였다. 이핵관은 당의 책임 있는 사람이 책임 있는 의견을 전달한 것 뿐이다. 정치적 용어로서 '윤핵관'과 같은 의미가 아니고 정 의원이 말을 재밌게 하려고 '이핵관'이라고 갖다 붙인 것"이라고 해명했다.
조응천 의원도 "제가 아는 한은 우리 당 내에 핵관은 없다"면서 "(국민의힘에서) 권성동, 장제원, 윤한홍 등 현역 의원들 중심으로 핵관이라고 그러는데, 그 분들이 아니라 실무진이 주로 비서실에 포진돼서 후보의 일정, 메시지를 그동안에 도맡아서 해왔다. 그래서 사고 난 게 삼프로TV"라고 설명했다. 그러면서 "민주당은 전부 다 권한과 직책이 같다"며 "적어도 윤핵관에 대비할 만한 이핵관은 없다"고 거듭 강조했다.
한편 조계종은 문재인 정부의 종교 편향에 항의하는 의미로 전국 사찰 입구에 '정청래 의원 사퇴하라', '민주당 각성하라' 등의 피켓을 걸어두고 있다. 또 오는 21일 예정된 ‘전국승려대회’를 강행하는 것과 함께 대선 직전인 다음달 말엔 '범불교도 대회'도 계획하고 있다.
이같은 불교계의 반발이 대선 정국에 어떤 변수로 작용할지 정치권은 그 파장에 집중하고 있는 분위기다.
