사회 현상 가운데, 신드롬(syndrome-증후군)이란 게 있다. 일련의 '증상'을 뜻한다. 문학작품이나 예술작품을 감상하면서 발생하는 '신드롬'도 있다.
우선, 스탕달 신드롬(프랑스 소설가 스탕달-Stendhal.1783-1842)이란 게 있다. 국어사전은 “뛰어난 예술 작품을 접하였을 때, 그 충격과 감흥으로 인하여 일어나는 정신적ㆍ육체적 이상(異常) 반응. 프랑스의 소설가 스탕달이 레니의 미술 작품을 보고 황홀경을 경험하였다고 한 데서 유래했다”고 설명하고 있다.
‘스탕달 신드롬’(Stendhal syndrome)이 만들어진 시기는 1817년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 그해, 스탕달은 이탈리아 피렌체의 산타크로체 성당을 방문했다. 이때 ‘베아트리체첸치’를 감상했다. 스탕달은 이날 쓴 일기문에서 “‘베아트리체첸치’ 그림을 감상한 이후, 심장박동이 빨라졌다. 그리고 무릎에 힘이 빠졌다. 황홀한 감정을 느꼈다”고 썼다. 이런 감정현상이 바로 '스탕달 신드롬'이다. 일반인 가운데도 예술작품을 보면서 이런 신드롬에 빠진다고 한다.
이탈리아의 화가ㆍ조각가ㆍ건축가ㆍ시인인 미켈란젤로 (Michelangelo, Buonarroti. 1475~1564)의 조각 작품 가운데 '다비드 상'이 있다. 서 있는 남자 조각상에 성기가 돌출돼 있다. 이 작품을 직접 감상한 이후의 반응은 각양각색이다. 이 조각품을 보면서 파괴하고 싶은 감정이 일어났다고 한다. 이 조각 작품을 보고 생겨난 특이한 감정을 '다비드 신드롬'이라고 한다.

사람이 사람을 미워한다는 것은 옳지 않은 일이다. 그러나 글로벌시대, 정치적으로 상대국의 혐오를 유발하는 것은 철저하게 자제하는 게 옳다. 총격으로 아베가 사망한 이후 '아베 신드롬'이 생겨났다는 것은 한국과 일본 국민들 간의 감정이 나빠져 있다는 것을 의미한다. 한국-일본 간, 좋은 감정으로의 복원 노력이 필요하다.
