전국 시군 우량암소 보유수 현황은 (사)한국종축개량협회가 2013년부터 발표 해 오고 있으며, 합천군이 1위를 차지한 것은 10년 만에 처음이다.
그동안 2위와 5위를 오간 합천군은 축산농가의 소득과 직결되는 한우암소개량에 합천축협과 함께 혼신을 다했고, 2022년 8월부로 612두를 보유해 전국 우량암소 보유 지자체 173개 시군 중 1위를 차지하는 영예를 얻었다.
한우 9만두 이상 사육하는 지자체를 따돌리고 한우 사육 4만 2천두 규모의 합천이 1위를 차지해 그 의미가 크다.
전국 번식우 170만두 중 0.8%에 해당하는 1만 4천두가 현재 우량암소로 지정되어 있으며, 선발 기준은 우량암소가 낳은 거세우의 도축 성적으로 정한다.
