브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 새마을금고 국제협력개발사업이 개발도상국 빈곤극복을 위한 대안으로 주목 받고 있다.
새마을금고중앙회는 행정안전부의 지도아래 국제협력개발사업을 꾸준히 추진해 왔다.
특히, 저축을 통해 가난을 극복한 새마을금고의 다양한 실천적 경험을 공유해 수원극 빈곤감소와 지속가능한 발전에 기여하는 것을 근본 목표로 하고 있다. 한국의 대표적 금융협동조합모델 공유를 통해 국제적 협력관계도 강화하고 있다.
현재 새마을금고는 미얀마, 우간다, 라오스 등에서 활동 중이다. 2017년 미얀마에 이어 2018년 우간다, 2020년에는 라오스에 새마을금고가 설립돼 현재 53개 새마을금고에서 약 1만3000명의 회원들이 거래하고 있다.
최근에는 미얀마와 우간다에 체계적인 새마을금고 육성을 위한 중앙회가 설립돼 자체적인 새마을금고 관리감독체계가 완성됐으며, 피지, 캄보디아는 물론, 중남미 등으로 새마을금고 모델 확산을 추진 중이다.
이달 5일에는 피지 수도 수바에서 피지 정부(농어촌개발부)와 ‘새마을금고 금융포용 ODA 사업 워크숍’을 개최했다. 워크숍에는 피지 농어촌개발부 장·차관, 청소년체육부 차관을 비롯해 상업통상부, 농업부, 원주민부 등 피지 유관부처 공무원 30여명이 참석해 높은 관심을 받았다.
박차훈 새마을금고중앙회장은 “새마을금고 플랫폼이 개발도상국 빈곤 타파의 대안으로 큰 호응을 얻고 있다”며 “더욱 적극적인 활동으로 새마을금고가 금융포용의 대표 브랜드로 자리잡을 수 있도록 할 것이다”고 전했다.
