세종시와 영국 벨파스트(Belfast)시 분야별 협력이 활기를 띨 전망이다.
최민호 세종시장은 7일 시청 접견실에서 영국 정부 내각의 북아일랜드 담당 스티브 베이커(Steve Baker) 장관과 환담을 가졌다.
이번 접견은 영국 정부가 추진 중인 ‘한·영 혁신 트윈스 프로젝트’ 추진에 따라 마련됐다.
이 자리에서 지능형도시, 교통수단(모빌리티), 새싹기업(스타트업)·중소기업 지원 등 혁신 분야별 협력 방안을 논의했다.
앞서 시는 지난해 6월 영국 정부 제안으로 시작한 한·영 도시 간 일대일 교류를 통해 지능형도시 현황 교류, 중소기업 진흥, 3국 시장 진출 등 경제발전과 도시문제 해결을 위해 상호협력을 모색해 왔다.
지난 3월 양 도시 간 지능형도시 산업 등과 관련한 협력 의향서를 체결하고 중소기업을 소개하는 등 벨파스트시와 다양한 소통을 이어왔다.
양 도시는 협력 사업으로 지능형도시, 과학기술, 도시개발, 무역투자 등 제반 혁신 분야별 정보를 공유하고 상호 보완적인 관계를 형성해 동반상승 효과를 거둘 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
오는 2025년 개최 예정인 ‘국제정원박람회’에 대비해 영국 런던, 워민스터 등 정원도시와의 협력을 강화하고 퀸스대학교 등 저명한 대학과도 연계해 양 도시의 선진 교육정책을 공유할 계획이다.
최민호 시장은 “벨파스트시는 영국 내 가장 중요한 세종시 파트너로 향후 공식적 우호협력 관계를 구축하고 다양한 분야에서 실질적인 협력사업을 추진해 나가겠다”라고 말했다.
베이커 장관과 북아일랜드무역투자청 관계자들은 이날 환담에 앞서 세종시 테크노파크 산학연클러스터 시설을 방문해 자율주행차량을 시승하고 관련 정책에 대해 의견을 나눴다.
한편 북아일랜드 수도인 벨파스트시는 유럽에서 가장 젊은 도시 중 하나로 디지털·금융·첨단 엔지니어링 등을 중심으로 도시발전에 집중하고 있다.
