최이는 두 아들이 울며 하소연해도 돌아앉은 채 눈길 한 번주지 않고 꾸짖었다.
“어디서 변명하려 드느냐 ? 네놈들 소행은 세상 사람들이 다 안다. 죽어도 모자랄 판에 감히 변명을 늘어놓아? 당장 나가거라. 두 번 다시 보고 싶지 않다.”
그때 마루에 있던 말녀가 아이를 안고 방에 들어왔다.
“웬 아이냐?”
“아버님. 이제야 말씀드립니다. 제가 늘 사람을 보내 동생들을 살펴서 잘 압니다. 모든 것이 모함입니다. 여기 이 아이를 보소서. 아버님 손자입니다.”
말녀의 말투가 조심, 조심, 또 조심스러웠다.
그도 그럴 것이 최이가 두 아들의 망나니 짓을 고쳐보려고 출가시켰거늘 종년이나 임신이나 시켰다고 노발대발 할 것이 뻔했다. 그런데 반응이 의외였다. 손자 소리에 귀가 번쩍 뜨였는지 돌아 앉았는데 얼굴에 희색이 감도는 게 아닌다.
말녀가 안도의 한숨을 쉬며 얼른 말을 이어 나갔다.
“아버니~~~~님, 만전이 아버님의 손자를 낳아 이만큼이나 키웠습니다. 그런 아비가 어찌 백성들을 수탈하겠습니까? 못된 아랫것들이 작당해 선사의 이름을 팔아 꾸민 일입니다. 권력을 탐하는 자들이 침소봉대한 것입니다.”

최이는 손자를 어루만지며 이제야 모든 게 정상으로 돌아가는 느낌이 들었다. 두 아들과 딸의 말을 다 믿지는 않았다. 하지만 권력 다툼에서 얼마든지 일어날 수 있는 일이라 여겼으며, 기왕이면 자기손자가 권력을 세습하는 게 낫겠다고 생각했다.
다음 날 최이는 정방을 소집했다. 김약선, 김준 등이 속속 착석한 뒤 최이가 만전을 데리고 나타났다.
“만전의 이름을 항沆이라 개명하고 오늘부로 환속한다.”
좌중이 술렁이는데도 최이는 별다른 설명 없이 폭탄선언을 이어갔다.
“내 두 아들을 모함한 박훤은 흑산도로 유배 보내고, 송국첨은 동경부유수로 좌천하라. 억울하게 당한 두 선사의 문도도 오늘부로 방면하라.”
김약선이 샛노래진 얼굴로 정방에서 힘없이 물러났다.
이로써 최항은 하루아침에 천하의 무뢰승에서 무신 정권의 후계자가 되었다. 그 후 최항은 김준에게 더 의지했다.

주었다. 악명 높은 두 아들을 미화시키려면 박훤 같은 인물이 필요했다.
최이가 고개를 끄덕였다.
“알았다. 박훤을 소환하라.”
그제야 마음이 놓인 김약선이 집에 측근들을 불러 모았다.
“며칠 후면 박훤이 돌아올 걸세. 장인도 사사로운 일보다 나라를 먼저 생각하는 분이네. 힘들 내자고.”
그들이 박훤을 기다리다가 경악할 소식을 들었다.
박훤이 강화도로 돌아오는 뱃길에 산 채로 수장되었다는 것이다. 최이가 비밀리에 사람을 보내 벌인 일이었다.

그는 스스로 위안하며 은인자 중의 나날을 보내야 했다. 이를 곁에서 지켜보기 답답했던지 마봉이 김약선에게 산에나 다녀오라면서 점심까지 챙겨주었다. 그는 홀로 마니산을 향하다가 도 중에 가까운 고려산으로 목적지를 바꿨다.
김약선이 청련사 근처에 올라 약수터에서 점심을 먹으려고 할때였다. 최항이 몇 사람과 함께 청련사에서 나왔다. 깜짝 놀란 김약선은 바위 뒤에 숨었다가 곧장 귀가했다.
집에 돌아오니 대문이 열려 있는 게 아닌가. 노비들은 모조리 일하러 나갔는지 집 안이 조용했다. 그런데 안방에서 이상한 소리가 났다. 남녀 상열지사때 나는 신음소리였다.
김약선이 달려가 방문을 벌컥 열었더니 사노 석두와 아내 마봉이 붙어 있었다. 석두는 기겁하며 후다닥 창문 너머로 도망쳤다. 당시 석두와 민가에 거주하던 황실 출신 비구니들이 살을 섞는다는 염문이 파다했다. 그런 놈이 자기 아내와 정분날 줄이야.
