군에 따르면 후계농 선발 및 지원사업은 농업 발전을 이끌어갈 유망한 농업인을 발굴하여 일정 기간 동안 농업창업에 필요한 자금·교육·컨설팅 등을 종합적으로 지원하여 정예농업인으로 육성하는 사업이다.
신청 자격은 만 18세 이상 ~ 만 50세 이하(1972. 1. 1. ~ 2005. 12. 31.)로 영농에 종사한 경력이 없거나 10년 이하인 병역필 또는 미필자도 신청은 가능하나, 후계농 자금 대출은 군 복무 완료 후 신청 가능하다.
평가항목에 의거 농업 교육평가는 대학의 농업 관련 학과나 농업계 고등학교를 졸업하였거나 군수가 인정한 농업 관련 교육을 일정시간(1~100시간이상, 차등적 배점)이상 이수하여야 하며 상기 요건을 모두 충족해야 한다.
