[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시가 지난 2019년부터 기초지방자치단체 최초로 추진해온 1단계 초소형위성 개발사업의 후속사업인 ‘2단계 초소형위성 개발사업’을 경남도, 한국산업기술시험원, 경상국립대와 함께 추진한다고 밝혔다.
진주시는 25일 한국산업기술시험원 우주부품시험센터에서 사업 참여기관 관계자들이 참석한 가운데 ‘2단계 초소형위성 개발사업’ 착수회의를 개최했다.
이번 진주샛 투 개발사업은 6U 크기의 초소형위성을 2027년까지 개발해 도내 우주기업 육성과 전문인력 양성에 기여하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
주관기관인 한국산업기술시험원은 우주부품시험센터 인프라와 우주 관련 시험 역량을 바탕으로 초소형위성 개발 및 발사와 우주환경 시험을 총괄하고 경상국립대는 개발 지원과 기술 연구 및 전문인력 양성을, 진주시와 경남도는 이에 필요한 행정·재정적 지원을 하게 된다.
해양 관측용 카메라를 장착한 진주샛 투는 한반도 연근해 해수면 및 선박 모니터링 데이터를 수집하며 위성 데이터는 도내 스타트업·벤처기업에게 일정 기간 동안 무료로 제공될 예정이다.
또한 각국의 우주개발이 가속되면서 심각한 문제로 떠오르고 있는 우주쓰레기 발생의 경감을 위해 임무 종료 후 위성 자체 폐기 및 지구 재진입 예측 기술 연구 등 신기술 확보에도 활용된다.
진주시 관계자는 “이번 초소형위성 개발사업을 통해 우주산업 활성화와 기업의 위성개발 시장 선점을 지원하겠다”며 “우주산업 클러스터 위성특화지구의 핵심 인프라로 추진되고 있는 우주환경시험시설 구축사업과 시너지 효과를 일으킬 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
