이날 개막식에는 3천5백여명이 참여한 가운데 점등식에서 형산강 연등숲과 거리등이 불을 밝히고, 강 위로 불꽃놀이가 펼쳐졌다.
이어 연등문화축제의 백미인 제등행렬이 화려한 취타대를 선두로 하여 장엄등과 함께 스님과 내빈, 불국사 스님과 신도, 경주불교사암연합회, 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 교직원, 재학생과 경주시민 등 2천여명이 형산강 고수부지를 출발하여 영마을 삼거리, 중앙시장 네거리, 신한은행 네거리 지나 봉황대까지 이어졌다.
학교법인 동국대학교 이사장 돈관스님은 “형산강 연등문화축제는 불교만의 행사가 아니라 지역민과 함께하는 문화행사라며, 장엄등과 연등을 보며 마음에 평화로운 시간을 가지시길 바라고 형산강 연등문화축제가 지역의 대표 축제로 자리매김하고 온 세상에 지혜의 불빛을 밝게 빛내게 되기를 기원한다.”고 말했다.
이영경 동국대 WISE캠퍼스총장은 “경주의 대표적인 문화행사로 자리매김한 형산강 연등문화축제가 지역민들의 많은 관심과 참여로 즐겁고 아름다운 추억을 만들 수 있는 행사가 되었으면 한다.”며 “4년만에 대면행사로 열리는 올해 형산강 연등문화축제가 지역민에게는 지혜의 빛으로 마음의 평화를 전하고, 관광객들에게는 경주의 역사와 문화를 체험할 수 있는 즐거운 축제가 되기를 기대한다.”고 전했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “경주의 대표적인 문화 행사로 자리매김한 형산강 연등문화축제가 지역민들의 많은 관심과 참여로 아름다운 추억을 만들 수 있는 행사가 되기를 바란다며, 오늘 행사에 참여한 모든 분들이 제등행렬을 하시며 2025년 APEC 정상회의 경주 유치를 다함께 염원해 주시기를 부탁드린다.”고 말했다.
2023 형산강 연등문화축제는 동국대 WISE캠퍼스와 불국사, 경주불교사암연합회, 경상북도, 경주시가 신라 시대에 시작된 연등회의 맥을 잇고 불기 2567(2023)년 부처님 오신 날을 봉축하기 위해 개최됐다.
5일까지 형산강 금장대 앞에서 다양한 전통문화체험, 연등 플로깅, 연등 페스타 등 다채로운 행사가 펼쳐진다. 장엄등 전시는 약 2주간 계속될 예정이며, 5월 29일까지 연등숲과 거리연등이 경주의 밤을 밝힌다.
