한화갑 원로 정치인은 이 인터뷰에서 “윤석열 대통령이 김대중 전 대통령의 전례를 언급하기도 하는데, 햇볕정책은 그 밑바닥에 한미동맹을 기초로 한 튼튼한 안보가 전제된 상황에서 펼칠 수 있다. 튼튼한 안보가 확보됐을 때 자신감을 가지고 북한과 상대해 나갈 수 있는 것이다. 그러나 지금 윤석열 정부의 대북 정책은 보면, 북한과 대결하기 위해서 한미동맹이 필요한 것 같은 인상을 주고 있다. 이런 상황에선 남북관계 절대로 풀릴 수가 없다. 따라서 윤석열 대통령은 북한에 대해 보다 유연한 자세를 보일 필요가 있다. 그렇다고 북한 요구에 끌려 다니라는 것도 아니다”면서 “미국과의 동맹을 굳건하게 끌고 가면서 북한에 대해서 우리가 평화롭게 지내자는 제스처를 보여줘야 한다”고 강조했다.
윤석열 대통령이 성공하려면? 그 대안이 뭘까? 한화갑 원로 정치인은 이와 관련 “윤석열 대통령은 북한에 대해 보다 유연한 자세를 보일 필요가 있다”고 조언했다.
한화갑 원로 정치인은 이어 “윤석열 대통령을 정치적으로 보면 대통령이라는 '벼락'을 맞은 사람이다. 윤 대통령에게 제언을 하자면 임기 동안 무슨 업적을 남기겠다고 조급해 하면 안 된다. 대통령으로서의 권력은 내 것이 아니라고 생각해야 한다. 국민들이 자신에게 위임해준 권력임을 상기해야 한다. 그 이후에는 국민들이 무엇을 원하는지를 찾고, 그걸 해결해주면 된다. 물론 국민이 원한다고 모든 걸 해줄 순 없지만 끊임없이 노력하는 모습을 보여야 한다. 반대로 자신의 업적을 쌓기 위해 국민이 아닌 자신이 원하는 걸 하면 성공한 대통령이 될 수 없다”면서 “윤석열 대통령은 오랜 기간 검찰에 몸담았기 때문에 아직도 사안을 대하는 자세나 국민을 대하는 자세를 보면 정치인으로서의 모습은 덜 갖춰져 있다. 검찰 수사관과 같이 위법한지 아닌지, 처벌 대상인지 아닌지, 존속시킬지 폐지시킬지 등 이분법적(二分法的) 사고는 하는데 능숙하다. 하지만 정치란 건 아무리 버려야 할 것처럼 보이는 것도 고쳐서 쓸 수 있는 지혜가 필요한 분야이다. 그걸 빨리 깨닫는 게 중요하다”고 피력했다.
