동막 해변에서 삼별초 지휘부가 모여 강화도를 떠나, 남해나 동해가 아닌 서해의 섬으로 이주하기로 결정한 직후 각 마을에 병사들이 파견되어 주민들이 생필품 위주로 간단한 짐을 꾸리도록 했다.
더불어 연안의 모든 배는 초지진 방향으로 집결시켰다.
다음날 모인 지휘부 회의에서 배중손이 누런 지도를 펴놓고 한 섬을 가리켰다.
“강화도보다는 제주에 더 가깝고, 제주보다는 본토가 더 가까운 섬이오.”
장수들이 이구동성으로 그 섬 이름이 무엇인지 물었다.
“내 고향 진도입니다.”
배중손의 대답에 김통정이 박수를 치며 말했다..
“아, 장군의 고향이 진도였지요? 아직 장군의 목장도 그대로 있고….”
유존혁도 고개를 끄더이며 덧붙였다.
“진도라면 한때 최항 별감이 주지 노릇했던 절이 있죠.”
배중손이 “그 절이 바로 용장사”라며, 손가락으로 진도와 육지 사이의 바다를 가리켰다.
“다들 여기를 보시오. 명량해협이오. 강화해협의 손돌목 같은 곳입니다. 물살이 빨라 적들이 쉽게 배를 부릴 수 없소. 고려에서 세 번째 큰 섬이며, 평야 지대도 넓고 비옥해 새 정부가 자급자족하고 남을 정도입니다. 조운선이 전라도와 경상도의 조곡을 싣고 임진강을 향해 올라가야 하는데, 가로채기에도 좋습니다. 물론 일본, 남송과 통교하기도 쉬우니 진도야말로 강화와 제주가 가진 장점을 다 갖춘 곳이라 할 수 있지요.”
그 자리에서 모두 진도로 천도하기고 결의하고, 출발 날짜는 이틀후인 6월 3일로 잡았다. 그러나 외부에는 4일날 떠날 것처럼 소문내기로 했으며, 물론 목적지가 진도라는 것도 철저히 함구했다.
남은 이틀 동안 지휘부는 고인돌에 머물고, 노영희는 각마을의 이주 준비 상황을, 김통정은 초지진에 모여든 배들을 점검하러 다녔다. 각 마을마다 담당 삼별초가 내일까지 이주 준비를 마무리하라고 독려했다.
그 다음 날, 땅거미가 내릴 즈음에야 노영희와 김통정이 돌아왔다.
벌써 낮이면 덥고, 해가지면 쌀쌀해졌다. 장작불을 피워 놓고 기다리던 배중손이 말을꺼냈다.

구포는 내가면 저수지 근처로, 지금은 평야이지만 당시만 해도 배가 들어오는 항구였다.
이제 출발 준비는 모두 끝났다. 초지진에 모았던 배들도 감쪽같이 구포로 옮겨 놓았다. 내일 새벽에 떠나기만 하면 되는 것이다.
낮에 거세게 벌던 바람도 잠들어 장작 불티가 반짝이며 치속아 오르고 있었다. 유달리 별이 맑은 밤이었다.
배중손과 노영희는 코까지 골며 자는데, 두 다리에 깍지를 끼고 앉아 있던 김통정이 일어섰다. 누우면 곧 잠에 떨어질 것 같아서였다. 이날 밤만큼은 잠으로 그냥 보내기 아쉬웠다. 어쩌면 38년 살아온 이 섬과 영원히 작별하는 시간이 아닌가.
지난 세월 강화도에 그의 눈길이 닿지 않은 곳이 없었다.
