브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= KT는 통신 장비 전문업체인 이노와이어리스와 5G와 LTE를 동시 서비스 가능한 ‘스몰 셀’을 개발하고 성능 검증까지 성공적으로 마쳤다고 21일 밝혔다.
스몰 셀은 소형 이동통신 기지국으로 일반 기지국의 신호가 약하거나 사용할 수 없는 음영 지역에서 서비스 범위와 용량을 늘리는 통신 장비다.
양사가 개발한 5G/LTE 통합 스몰 셀은 4개의 안테나로 5G 데이터를 송수신(4T4R)하고 2개의 안테나는 LTE를 송수신(2T2R)한다. 하나의 스몰 셀에 6개의 안테나가 설치된 것은 이번이 처음이다. 이 장비는 5G 단독모드(SA, StandAlone)와 비단독모드(NSA: Non StandAlone) 모두를 지원한다.
KT는 해당 스몰 셀이 기존 대비 안테나 개수가 2배로 늘어 신호 품질이 향상되고 서비스 범위가 넓어졌다며, 데이터 송수신 속도의 경우 최대 2배(다운로드 속도 최대 1.4Gbps)까지 증가된다고 설명했다.
한편, KT는 인터넷선만 연결하면 손쉽게 설치할 수 있는 LTE 스몰 셀 ‘기가 아토(GiGA Atto)’을 2017년에 개발했다. 현재 전국에 약 20만대의 기가 아토를 고객들이 이용하고 있다. 기가 아토 개발 과정에서 쌓인 기술력과 노하우가 이번 스몰셀 개발에 큰 역할을 했다.
