여자들은 갱년기가 되면 정수리의 모발이 점점 얇아지는 탈모가 생기기 시작한다. 왜 그런지 그 이유를 알아보자.
탈모를 일으키는 남성호르몬인 DHT와는 달리 여성호르몬은 모발을 성장시키는 호르몬이다.
여성호르몬인 에스트로겐(estrogen)은 남성호르몬인 테스토스테론이 아로마타제(aromatase)에 의해 전환된 호르몬이다. 에스트로겐 역시 남녀 모두 부신에서 분비되고 남성은 고환에서, 여성은 난소에서 각각 분비된다. 따라서, 에스트로겐은 여자와 마찬가지로 남성에게도 존재하고 있으며, 단지 여성에 비해 양이 매우 적게 분비될 뿐이다.
에스트로겐은 DHT호르몬과 반대로 두피의 털에 대해서는 성장을 촉진하고, 눈썹 아래 부위의 털에 대해서는 성장을 억제한다. 여성이 남자에 비해 몸에 털이 없는 이유다.
