브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 현대자동차가 ‘캘리포니아 항만 친환경 트럭 도입 프로젝트(NorCAL ZERO)’의 공식 출범을 계기로 북미 시장에서 수소전기트럭 사업 본격 전개에 나선다.
‘캘리포니아 항만 친환경 트럭 도입 프로젝트’는 ‘캘리포니아 대기환경국(CARB, California Air Resources Board)’과 ‘캘리포니아 에너지위원회(CEC, California Energy Commission)’에서 주관하는 북미 지역 항만 탈탄소화 사업이다.
2일(현지시간) 미국 오클랜드에서 진행된 출범식에는 현대차를 비롯해 미국 친환경 프로젝트 지원 비영리단체 CTE(The Center for Transportation and the Environment), 캘리포니아 대기환경국, 캘리포니아 에너지위원회 등의 주요 관계자들이 참석했다.
현대차는 2021년 해당 프로젝트의 친환경 상용트럭 입찰에서 최종 공급사로 선정된 후 CTE와 함께 컨소시엄을 구성하고 파트너사들과의 적극적인 협력을 통해 북미 지역 수소 밸류체인 구축에 힘써왔다.
현대차는 프로젝트의 일환으로 지난해 하반기 엑시언트 수소전기대형트럭(XCIENT Fuel Cell) 30대를 ‘글로비스 아메리카(GLOVIS America)’ 산하 트럭 운송 사업자인 ‘G.E.T Freight’에 공급했다. 이는 북미 운송업체 단일 공급 최대 규모로, 기존 오염물질 고배출 트럭을 대체해 오클랜드 항구 컨테이너 운반 및 리치몬드 항구 차량 운송을 담당하고 있다.

CTE에 따르면 이번 프로젝트와 연계한 엑시언트 수소전기트럭 공급으로 프로젝트가 종료되는 2028년까지 디젤 트럭 대비 약 2만4000톤의 탄소 감축 효과를 볼 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
현대차는 ‘캘리포니아 항만 친환경 트럭 도입 프로젝트’를 통해 구축한 수소 모빌리티 밸류체인을 활용해 향후 북미 친환경 상용차 사업 확장에 적극 나선다는 계획이다.
특히, 현대차는 미국 환경보호청(EPA)이 주관하는 ‘TAG(Targeted Airshed Grants)’ 프로그램과 연계해 올해 상반기부터 캘리포니아에 수소전기트럭 5대를 추가로 공급할 예정이다.
