[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시는 전 세계 66개 유네스코 공예 및 민속예술분야 창의도시 네트워크의 의장도시로 선정됐다고 27일 밝혔다.
지난 24일부터 26일까지 오스트레일리아 밸러렛(Ballarat)에서 열린 ‘2024 공예 및 민속예술 창의도시 서브네트워크 연례회의’에서 회원도시들의 의장도시에 대한 동의와 유네스코 사무국의 승인을 얻어 진주시가 의장도시로 최종 선정됐다.
이로써 진주시는 경기도 이천시에 이어 국내 두 번째로 유네스코 창의도시 의장도시가 됐다.
진주시가 2019년 창의도시로 선정된 이후 빠른 시간 내 의장도시로 선정된 가장 큰 이유는 2022년 공예 및 민속예술 부문 서브네트워크 연례회의 유치에 따라 회원도시들에게 자치단체장의 관심도와 시의 역량을 높이 평가 받았기 때문이다.
향후 의장도시 임기 2년 동안 유네스코 공예 및 민속예술 창의도시들의 대표로서 유네스코 사무국 운영위원회에 직접 참여하게 되어 국제적 위상이 강화되고, 시의 홍보에도 크게 기여하게 될 것으로 보인다.
뿐만 아니라 오는 7월 포르투갈에서 개최되는 유네스코 창의도시 연례회의에서 공예 및 민속예술 클러스터 사업들을 주관하는 등 전 세계에 대한민국의 공예와 민속예술을 적극적으로 알릴 수 있는 입지를 다지게 됐다.
유네스코 창의도시 네트워크(UCCN)는 2004년 10월 문화 다양성을 위한 국제연대사업의 일환으로 시작된 국제 네트워크이다.
음악, 영화, 음식, 공예 및 민속예술, 문학, 미디어아트, 디자인 등 총 7개 분야의 100여개국, 350개 도시가 가입되어 있으며, 국내 도시로는 서울, 부산 등 12개 도시가 있다.
진주시는 2019년 10월 공예 및 민속예술 분야의 유네스코 창의도시로 선정되어 국제학술토론회, 진주전통공예비엔날레, 세계민속예술비엔날레, 공예 및 민속예술 국제저널 발간, 실크레지던시 개최 등 다양한 사업을 추진해왔다.
