어떤 이들은 이슬람 및 중동, 아랍 문화와 역사를 몰라도 여태까지 중동과 석유 거래를 하며 잘 지내왔다고 말한다. 그리고 그건 어느 정도 사실이다. 현재까지 아무 문제 없었다. 중동과 아랍의 역사와 문화, 관습을 몰라도 말이다. 그러나 그게 앞으로도 그럴 것이라 생각하면 큰 오산이다. 현재까지 우리가 그들을 몰라도 경제적인 협력 등으로 인해 잘 지냈던 것은 그들도 우리를 몰랐고 미국이라는 든든한 뒷배가 있었으며 우리의 건설회사들이 중동의 인프라를 만들어 주고 중동으로부터 석유를 받았기 때문이다. 그것이 현재의 경제적으로 잘 사는 대한민국이 되었다.
그런데 이제 일극에서 다극으로 변화하는 시기이자 아랍이 옛 이슬람 문화, 문명을 일으켰던 것처럼 도약하기 시작했다. 이번에 리야드 엑스포가 압도적으로 승리했던 것은 이러한 도약이 실제로 이루어지고 있음을 의미한다. 과거 중세 시기, 국제성과 보편성이 뛰어난 이슬람 문화는 과학을 중심으로 무슬림들의 적극적인 활동으로 동서양 여러 곳으로 전파되었으며, 특히 중세 유럽 문화에 큰 영향을 주어 후일 근대과학의 진보에 결정적인 이바지를 했다. 이슬람 세계의 학문과 문화적 성취는 유럽의 르네상스를 일으키는 원동력이 되었다.
이미 그런 전력이 있는 세계가 이제는 IT와 과학으로 승부를 보려하고 있다. 한국인들은 중동과 아랍이 "오일머니" 밖에 없다며 비웃고 조롱하지만 그 돈도 어떻게 쓰느냐에 따라 다르다. 우리는 과거 경제개발과 그로 인한 10대 경제대국 안에 들어가는 성과의 돈을 국민 복지, 국토 개발 등에 쓰고 있지만 이제는 좁은 국토와 출생률 0% 대의 급격한 고령화와 인구 감소 등으로 인해 한계를 보이고 있다. 그러나 중동과 아랍은 인구도 적절히 늘려가며 광대한 국토 개발로 인한 네움 시티 건설, 첨단 IT와 과학 기술을 개발하고 발전시키는데 그 돈을 써왔다. 그리고 이제는 자국의 문화와 역사 등을 널리 알리는 것에도 상당한 양의 돈을 투자하고 있다.
나는 두바이의 사라크 알 하디드(Saruq Al-Hadid) 고고학박물관에서 웅장한 CG의 스캐일을 보고 소름이 돋은 바 있다. 이게 당시 찍어온 아래의 사진들인데 고고학 발굴도 첨단 IT 과학을 접목시켜 진행하고 있다. 유적에 대한 다각도의 분석 CG를 보면 감탄이 절로 나온다. 아랍에미리트가 단순히 경제적으로 돈만 많은 그런 지역인줄 알았는데 이제 고고학도 한국을 뛰어넘는 수준이 되었다. 역사나 고고학사가 훨씬 더 우리보다 짧은 아랍에미리트는 우리의 고고학을 이미 추월했다. 오일머니니 뭐니하고 저들은 경제나 비즈니스 밖에 모른다면서 인문학적으로 매우 무식하다고 무시했던 중동 고고학의 수준이 우리가 무시할 수준이 아니구나를 느끼고 온 몸에 소름이 돋았다.
