6월 둘째주 갤럽여론조사에서 "이재명 대통령이 잘 할 것이다"는데 70%의 기대치가 나왔다. 역대 대통령들의 취임 초 "잘할 것"이란 점수는 문재인이 87%로 가장 높았고 김영삼 85%, 이명박, 박근혜가 각각79% 동률이었다. 이재명의 70%는 상당히 높지만 역대로 보면 5위다.

취임 초 미국 트럼프대통령과 통화가 안돼 혹 친중성향으로 낙인찍어 기합을 주는거 아닌가 무척신경이 쓰였다. 다행히 4일만에 통화가 됐고 일본 중국 시진핑과 통화가 이뤄졌다. 미국 백악관이 먼저 통화해야 다른 나라도 가능하다. 뭐니뭐니 해도 미국에 잘보여야 하고 미국이 왕초임이 냉엄한 현실이다. 미국과 사이나 나쁘면 외국자본도 한국증시에서 빠져나갈 것이고 이대통령이 자랑삼는 주가도 대폭락 해버릴 것이다. 미국언론들은 꼬박꼬박 좌파(left leaning) 대통령이 당선됐다는 표현을 쓰고 있다. 윤석열 문재인 박근혜 등은 취임 하루 이틀 만에 통화가 됐는데 이재명은 나흘이 걸린 것은 아직 석연치 않음이 남아있다는 뜻이기도 하다.
나는 언론인 생활을 오래하면서 역대대통령들과 많이 얘기를 나눠봤다. 직접 인터뷰했거나 만나본 인물들은 전두환 김영삼 김대중 노무현 이명박 박근혜 문재인 전대통령 등이었다. 그래서 대통령들의 특성을 예리하게 관찰해왔다. 이재명이 전임 대통령들은 상상조차 못할 행동을 보인 장면은 대통령실 출입 사진기자의 무거운 사진기를 달라고 해서 "이렇게 찍느냐"며 액션을 취한 장면이 신문에 보도된 사진이다. 역대 대통령들은 권위와 근엄함, 무게 잡기의 상징이었다. 어디서 사진기자와 장난질 비슷함을 흉내 낸단 말인가. 소탈함 탈 권위의 대명사였던 노무현도 그런 장면은 생각조차 못했을 것이다. 이재명은 확실히 다른 인물이다. 파격적이다, 그것이 좋은지 아니면 남미 페로니즘을 흉내낸 포퓰리스트의 풍모인지 나는 아직은 모르겠다. 예의 관찰해보려고 한다.
이재명은 취임 보름여동안 정말이지 대단히 부지런하게 움직이는 것 같다. 동에 번쩍 서에 번쩍이다. 체코총리, 베트남주석과도 통화하는 게 이채롭고 윤석열 정부에서 임명한 장관들과 국무회의를 하면서 서 너 시간 토론하는 것도 전임대통령들은 점잖은 체면에 못하는 행동이다. 이재용 삼성회장 등 재벌 총수들, 경제단체장들과 면담을 겸한 오찬, 취임 첫날 야당대표들과 점심, 휴전선에서 북한을 향한 방송중단, 접경지역 현지주민 방문 등등. 전임 박근혜 문재인 윤석열 3대 통령을 합쳐놓은 것 만큼 일을 많이 하는 것 같다. 그 동안에 해놓은 대통령실 인사, 경제부처 차관들 인선 등에 대한 평가도 좋은 편이다. 김민석 총리의 과거 반미행적, 이종석국정원장의 완고한 친북중성향은 구설수에 오르기도 하지만. 트럼프 주니어가 한번 다녀갔는데 주변에 이재명은 친중파라는 인식을 살짝 비쳤다는 말도 들려왔다.
신임 이재명 대통령은 지금까지는 말을 하고 사람들을 만나 좋은 소리를 보따리로 풀어내놔 인기는 반짝 더 오를 수도 있다고 본다. 좋은 게 좋다는 식이었다. 어떤 결정이나 성향을 분명히 드러낸 장면은 드물었다. 그런 와중에 이대통령은 분명하게 3가지노선은 양보하지 않고 뚜렷한 의지를 드러냈다.
첫째는, 3대 특검으로 보수세력을 엄히 손보겠다는 것, 윤석열의 장관들과 토론에서 내란특검, 김건희특검은 정치보복이라고 정면으로 들이받은 장관들도 있었지만 한 치도 물러서지 않고 즉시 특검을 임명해버렸다. 내란특검으로 임명받은 조은석은 매우 혹독하고 끈질긴 성품으로 정평이 난 윤석열 전 대통령과 구원을 지닌 인물이다.
둘째, 친북이다. 북한과 해빙무드 조성이다. 대북방송금지에 이어 대북전단 살포시 처벌을 지시했다.
셋째, 부자감세는 절대 안돼! 이다. 세계 최고의 상속증여세는 한푼도 깎아주지 않겠다는 것, 재벌총수, 경제단체장과 미팅에서 어떤 회장이 상속세를 낮춰달라고 하자 "그건 절대 안된다"고 딱 잘랐다. 세계 최고세율 50~60%(OECD 평균 26%)에서 한 푼도 못 깎겠다는 것, 이건 "나는 절대 보수주의자가 아니다"고 선언한 셈이다.
취임 보름가량 이재명 대통령은 부지런한 행동과 달콤한 말로 대중의 점수를 땄다. 그러고도 반대세력 척결, 부자를 혼내는 비수를 뒤에서 갈은 것으로 보인다. 북한은 확실히 챙기는 중이다. 미국 중국은 아직 미지수다. 여기까지는 어떤 대통령이든지 쉽게 할 수 있다. 그냥 좋은 말로만 하면 되니까. 마키아벨리는 군주란 모든 성품을 고루갖춘 것으로 보여도 필요하면 일부러 그에 반하는 행동도 해야 한다, 즉 여우와 꾀와 사자의 용기기 필요함을 누누이 강조했다.

문재인은 미사여구도 없이 뭉개나가고 윤석열도 그 비슷하게 했다가 쫄딱 망한걸 우리는 알고 있다. 이재명 정부는 취임 3주로 접어들어 부동산불안을 해결하고 트럼프와 회담을 시점으로 이제 더 이상 말로 때울 순 없는 순간이 오고 있다. 진짜 실력으로 유능하게 하는지 채점이 시작될 것이다.
