도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 7일(현지시간) "최종이라 말하겠지만 만약 그들(협상 상대국)이 다른 제안을 갖고 전화하고 만약 내가 그 제안을 좋아한다면 우리는 그렇게 할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 열린 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리와의 만찬 자리에서 '오늘 보낸 서한이 미국의 최종 제안인가'란 언론 질의에 이같이 답했다.
또 '8월 1일이란 시한이 확고한가'란 질의엔 "난 확고하나 100% 확고하다 하지 않겠다"며 "만약 그들이 전화해 '우리는 무언가를 다른 방식으로 하고 싶다'고 말한다면 우리는 거기에 열려 있을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 한국·일본 등에 당초 오는 9일부터 부과 예정이었던 상호관세를 추가 유예해 오는 8월 1일부터 부과하겠다고 통보하면서 무역 협상 결과에 따라 관세율 인하 가능성을 시사한 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 만찬에서 "일부 국가는 어쩌면 (관세율을) 조금 조정할 것"이라며 "우리는 훨씬 더 많이 요구할 수 있으나 여러 정말 훌륭한 국가들과 유지해온 관계를 위해 내가 하는 방식대로 할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "인도와 무역 합의가 임박했다"며 "이란과 핵 협상 재개 일정을 잡았다"고 밝혔다.
만찬에 배석한 스티브 위트코프 중동 담당 특사는 향후 이란과의 협상 개최 여부 관련해 "매우 빠르게 할 것이며 다음 주 정도 될 것"이라고 전했다.
트럼프 대통령은 미국이 최근 시리아에 대한 제재 해제를 언급 후 "이란에 대해서도 그렇게 할 수 있길 바란다"고 말했다.

한편 트럼프 대통령은 이날 한국·일본 등 14개국에 25∼40％ 국가별 상호관세를 적시한 관세 서한을 보내 오는 8월 1일부터 부과하겠다고 통보했다.
또 이날 무역 상대국들에 대한 상호관세 부과 유예 시한을 기존 7월 9일에서 8월 1일까지로 연장하는 행정명령에 서명한 가운데 당초 오는 9일부터 적용 예정이었던 25% 상호관세 관세율은 유지한 채 부과 시점을 뒤로 미룬 것이다.
