충남 당진시의 향토무형유산으로 지정된 방짜유기가 전통을 넘어 디자인과 마케팅 분야로 확장되며 새로운 도약을 시작한다.
당진시(시장 오성환)는 11일, 방짜유기장(보유자 이광석)이 특허청의 ‘지식재산 긴급지원사업’과 당진시 중소기업 지원센터의 ‘마케팅 지원사업’에 동시에 선정됐다고 밝혔다.
방짜유기는 구리와 주석을 일정한 비율로 혼합한 후 고온에서 단조하는 전통 금속공예품으로, 내구성이 뛰어나고 은은한 금속광택이 특징이다. 이번 사업 선정으로 방짜유기는 문화유산으로서의 가치를 넘어, 현대 소비자 감각에 맞춘 제품 개발과 브랜드 경쟁력을 갖출 기회를 얻게 됐다.
특허청이 주관하는 ‘지식재산 긴급지원사업’은 전국 24개 지역지식재산센터를 통해 중소기업의 특허, 디자인, 브랜드 개발 등 지식재산 관련 애로사항을 지원하는 사업이다. 방짜유기는 이 가운데 ‘포장 디자인’ 부문에 선정돼 로고 및 브랜드 개발, 포장재 디자인, 특허 출원 등 지식재산 기반의 경쟁력 강화 작업을 추진하게 된다.

이와 함께 당진시가 주관하고 당진상공회의소와 충남산학융합원이 공동 운영하는 중소기업 지원센터의 ‘마케팅 지원사업’에도 선정됐다. 이를 통해 홍보물 기획, 디자인 개발 등 시장 친화적인 마케팅 활동이 병행 추진될 예정이다.
당진시 관계자는 전통 공법에 따라 만들어진 당진 방짜유기는 오랜 세월의 역사와 문화가 깃든 유산”이라며, “이번 지원 사업을 계기로 더 많은 시민들이 당진의 무형유산을 접할 수 있기를 기대하며, 앞으로도 문화유산의 보존과 활용을 위한 노력을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.
이광석 방짜유기장은 충남 당진 출신으로, 40여 년간 전통 유기 제작에 헌신해 왔으며 현재는 전라북도 무형유산 방짜유기장 이수자로 활동하고 있다. 지난 2024년에는 당진시 향토무형유산 방짜유기장 보유자로 지정되며 지역 전통문화의 전승과 보존에 앞장서고 있다.
