(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 환경부 산하 수도권매립지관리공사(이하 공사)가 22일,  창립 25주년을 맞아 공사 홍보관에서 전·현직 임직원과 주민대표, 협력사 관계자 등이 참석한 가운데 기념행사를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 

공사에 따르면, 이날 행사는 수도권 폐기물 처리의 핵심 시설로 자리매김해 온 공사의 지난 성과를 되돌아보고, 급변하는 환경 정책과 사회적 요구에 발맞춘 미래 전략을 함께 모색하기 위해 마련됐다.

2000년 설립된 공사는 지난 25년 동안 수도권 2,600만 시민의 폐기물을 안정적으로 처리하며 수도권 환경안전의 중추적 역할을 수행해왔다. 

단순한 매립을 넘어 자원화와 에너지화로 이어지는 폐기물 처리 시스템을 구축해 자원순환 중심의 지속가능한 공공기관으로 변모해 왔다.

공사는 주민과의 신뢰회복과 지역사회 상생에도 힘써왔다. 장학사업, 환경개선 지원, 지역 일자리 창출 등 다양한 사업을 통해 지역사회와의 공존을 실현하고, 실질적인 지역경제 활성화에 기여해 왔다.

이날 행사에서 송병억 사장은 기념사를 통해 지난 25년 동안 공사가 수행해 온 폐기물 처리 성과를 언급하며, “앞으로는 자원화와 에너지화를 중심으로 폐기물 처리 패러다임의 전환을 고민해야 한다”고 강조했다.

또한, “기후변화에 발맞추어 업무의 확대가 필요하다”며, 나아가 “지역사회와의 상생을 위한 주민 친화적 사업 계속 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.
