【브레이크뉴스 경북】진예솔 기자=경북교육청(교육감 임종식)은 경주시와 문경시가 교육부 재평가를 통해 ‘교육발전특구 시범지역’으로 최종 지정됐다고 밝혔다.
교육발전특구 시범사업은 지자체, 교육청, 대학, 기업, 공공기관 등이 협력해 교육 혁신과 지역 인재 양성, 정주 생태계 조성 등을 지원하는 국가균형발전 핵심 사업이다.
경북은 총 15개 시군이 교육발전특구 시범지역으로 선정되며, 전국에서 가장 많은 특구 운영 지자체로 자리매김하게 됐다.
시범 운영 기간은 오는 2026년까지 3년이며, 이번에 지정된 경주와 문경도 같은 기간 운영된다.
경주시는 풍부한 역사문화 자산과 미래차·원자력 등 첨단 산업 기반을 융합한 정주형 미래교육 모델로 높은 평가를 받았고, 문경시는 마을교육공동체 기반 돌봄 체계, 지역 정체성 중심 체험교육, 신산업 연계 인재 양성 계획 등을 제시해 주목을 받았다.
두 지역은 지난해 2차 공모 당시 예비 지정됐으나, 경북교육청의 맞춤형 컨설팅과 운영기획서 보완을 통해 이번 재평가에서 최종 선정됐다. 재평가 결과, 경주시는 선도지역, 문경시는 관리지역으로 각각 지정됐다.
경북은 선도지역이 기존 포항, 김천, 안동, 구미, 영주, 영천, 상주, 예천, 울진, 울릉에 경주까지 더해져 총 11곳, 관리지역은 칠곡, 봉화, 경산, 문경 등 4곳으로 확대됐다.
경북교육청은 이번 추가 지정을 계기로 지역 간 연계와 산업 특성을 결합한 ‘클러스터형 교육발전특구’ 모델을 새롭게 구상 중이다
임종식 교육감은 “경주와 문경의 추가 지정으로 경북형 교육발전특구 모델이 한층 더 견고해졌다”며 “지자체와 협력해 교육을 통한 지역 활성화와 정주 여건 개선을 지속 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Mungyeong garnered attention for its proposed village education community-based care system, regional identity-centered experiential education, and new industry-linked talent development plans.
The two regions were tentatively designated during the second round of bidding last year, but were finally selected in this reevaluation after customized consulting and a revised operational plan from the Gyeongbuk Office of Education. As a result of the reevaluation, Gyeongju was designated as a pilot region, and Mungyeong as a management region.
In Gyeongbuk, the pilot region expanded to 11 regions, including Pohang, Gimcheon, Andong, Gumi, Yeongju, Yeongcheon, Sangju, Yecheon, Uljin, and Ulleung, with Gyeongju added. The management region expanded to four regions: Chilgok, Bonghwa, Gyeongsan, and Mungyeong.
With this additional designation, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education is reimagining its "cluster-type education development special zone" model, combining regional connectivity and industrial characteristics.
Superintendent Lim Jong-sik stated, "The additional designations of Gyeongju and Mungyeong further solidify the Gyeongbuk-type education development special zone model. We will continue to collaborate with local governments to revitalize the region and improve settlement conditions through education."
