더불어민주당 윤리심판원이 ‘공천 헌금 의혹’으로 김병기 의원에 대해 제명을 의결(1월12일)했다. 원내대표직 사퇴 13일 만에 나온 최고 수위의 징계다. 의혹의 내용은 가볍지 않다. 2020년 총선을 앞두고 지역 구의원으로부터 공천 헌금을 받았다는 핵심 의혹을 비롯해, 자녀 편입 개입 논란, 대기업과의 고가 식사, 항공사 숙박권 수수, 공항 의전 요구, 국정원 관련 사적 동원 의혹까지 줄줄이 불거져 있었다. 정치적 생명력은 이미 상당 부분 소진된 상태였다.
정청래 대표의 속내가 어땠을 지는 정치권에서 굳이 설명하지 않아도 안다. 김병기는 대표 체제에서 ‘눈엣가시’에 가까운 존재였다. 그러나 중요한 것은 감정이 아니라 처리 방식이다. 민주당은 일단 결정을 내리면 빠르게 실행했다. 옳고 그름의 최종 평가는 사법 절차와 국민이 하겠지만, 당 차원에서 “문제 있는 사안은 더 끌지 않는다”는 신호를 분명히 보냈다는 점은 부인하기 어렵다.
이 대목에서 국민의힘은 불편한 비교 대상이 된다. 한동훈 전 대표 게시판 논란은 제기된 지 3년이 넘었지만, 아직도 당의 공식 입장은 오락가락이다. 사실관계 정리도, 정치적 결단도 없이 시간만 흘려보냈다. 책임질 사람은 없고, 봉합은 늘 미완성이다. 그러는 사이 당은 분열했고, 지지층은 피로해졌다.
정치는 도덕성만으로 굴러가지 않지만, 위기 대응 능력은 정당의 체력을 가늠하는 잣대다. 민주당이 김병기를 제명했다고 해서 도덕적으로 우월해졌다고 말하는 것은 아니다. 다만 “문제가 드러났을 때 어떻게 처리하느냐”에서는 분명한 차이를 보였다. 국민의힘은 내부 갈등이 생기면 ‘더 보자’, ‘지켜보자’며 미루는 사이, 사안은 곪고 여론은 돌아선다.
지금 여야 정치 지형은 단순하다. 민주당은 속도를 무기로 삼아 당 장악력을 강화하고 있고, 국민의힘은 결단을 미루다 스스로 발목을 잡고 있다. 당명 변경 이야기가 나오는 것도 위기의식의 반영일 것이다. 그러나 간판만 바꾼다고 정치가 달라지지는 않는다. 먼저 해야 할 일은 한동훈 파 정리든, 명확한 재정립이든 내부 교통정리다. 정치에는 중립적 방치라는 선택지가 없다.

국민은 느리지만 착한 정당보다, 빠르고 책임지는 정당을 먼저 평가한다. 민주당의 이번 결정이 칭찬받을 일은 아닐지 몰라도, 정치가 어떻게 작동해야 하는지는 보여줬다. 국민의힘이 계속 뒤처지는 이유는 정책도, 인물도 아니다. 결정하지 않는 습관, 그 자체다. 정치는 기다려주지 않는다. 이제는 속도를 내야 할 시간이다.

His political vitality had already been significantly drained.
The political world needs no explanation of Representative Chung Cheong-rae's true intentions. Kim Byung-ki was a thorn in the side of the leadership system. However, the key issue is not his emotions, but his handling of the situation. Once the Democratic Party made a decision, it quickly implemented it. While the final judgment on right and wrong will be left to the judiciary and the public, it's undeniable that the party sent a clear signal that it would "not drag out problematic issues."
In this regard, the People Power Party presents an uncomfortable comparison. More than three years have passed since the controversy surrounding former leader Han Dong-hoon's online bulletin board arose, yet the party's official position remains inconsistent. Time has simply passed without any clear-cut facts or political resolution. No one is held accountable, and the resolution remains incomplete. The Democratic Party's expulsion of Kim Byung-ki doesn't necessarily mean it has become morally superior. However, there is a clear difference in how it handles issues when they arise. When internal conflict arises, the People Power Party simply procrastinates, saying, "Let's wait and see," while the issue festers and public opinion shifts.
The current political landscape between the ruling and opposition parties is simple. The Democratic Party is strengthening its grip by using speed as a weapon, while the People Power Party is holding itself back by delaying decisions. The talk of changing the party name likely reflects a sense of crisis. However, simply changing the name won't change politics. The first priority is to manage internal conflict, whether by eliminating the Han Dong-hoon faction or by clearly reorganizing the party. In politics, there's no such thing as neutral inaction.
The public prioritizes a fast and responsible party over a slow but good one. While the Democratic Party's recent decision may not be praiseworthy, it demonstrates how politics should function. The reason the People Power Party continues to lag isn't its policies or its personnel. It's its very habit of not making decisions. Politics doesn't wait. Now is the time to accelerate.
