정치에서 단식은 가장 오래된, 동시에 가장 위험한 투쟁 방식이다. 말과 법안, 숫자와 표결이 모두 무력해졌을 때, 정치인은 자신의 몸을 마지막 설득 수단으로 내놓는다. 그래서 단식은 언제나 옳을 수도, 언제나 그를 지지해야 할 이유도 아니다. 그러나 단식이 가진 정치적 무게와 진정성만큼은 함부로 조롱하거나 갈라쳐서는 안 된다.
장동혁 국민의힘 대표가 15일 무기한 단식에 돌입했다. 더불어민주당이 2차 종합 특검법을 힘으로 밀어붙이는 상황에서, 국민의힘과 개혁신당이 요구하는 통일교·공천헌금 특검을 관철시키겠다는 명분이었다. 여권 대표가 선택한 극단적 방식에 대해 비판도 있지만, 이 장면을 가볍게 넘길 수 없는 이유가 있다.
불과 몇 해 전, 이재명 당시 더불어민주당 대표 역시 24일간 단식투쟁을 벌였다. 윤석열 정부의 국정 운영, 후쿠시마 오염수 대응, 민생 위기를 문제 삼았다. 정치적 효과와 진정성 논란은 지금도 엇갈리지만, 민주당은 그 단식을 “민주주의를 지키기 위한 결단”이라 평가했다. 그때 여권은 “정치 쇼”라 비판했다. 지금은 입장이 뒤바뀌었다.
정치는 아이러니의 연속이다. 그러나 중요한 질문은 이것이다. 같은 수단을 두고, 왜 우리는 편 가르기에만 몰두하는가. 단식의 목적은 다르다. 이재명 대표의 단식은 정권 전반을 향한 저항이었고, 장동혁 대표의 단식은 특정 법안과 수사의 방향에 대한 문제 제기다. 하나는 ‘국정 비판’이었고, 다른 하나는 ‘입법 저지와 대안 특검 요구’다. 그러나 공통점은 분명하다. 의회 민주주의가 제대로 작동하지 않는다고 판단했을 때, 정치인이 선택한 최후의 카드라는 점이다.
그래서 지금 국민의힘 당원들에게 더 중요한 것은 장동혁 개인의 정치적 계산을 따지는 일이 아니다. “저건 쇼냐, 진심이냐”를 놓고 내부에서 서로를 향해 손가락질하는 순간, 단식의 정치적 메시지는 사라지고 당만 남는다.
지금 필요한 구호는 이것이다. “내가 장동혁이다.” 이 말은 개인숭배가 아니다. 노선에 대한 맹목적 복종도 아니다. 당 대표가 정치적 책임을 몸으로 짊어지고 나섰다면, 최소한 당원과 지도부는 의지를 공유하는 집단적 태도를 보여야 한다는 뜻이다. 단식을 찬성하든, 전략적으로 우려하든, 내부 총질과 갈라치기는 스스로를 무너뜨리는 행위다.
