울진군(군수 전찬걸)은 지난 11일 한국해양과학기술원 동해연구소 대회의실에서 ‘국가 해중공원벨트 조성 기본계획 및 타당성 조사 연구용역’착수보고회를 개최했다고 12일 밝혔다.

이번 용역은 왕돌초와 동해 첨단 해양과학기지를 연계한 국내 유일의 국가 해중공원벨트 조성을 통하여 해양환경의 보전과 울진만의 특색 있는 해양관광 인프라 구축 목적으로 진행된다.
해양수산부와 한국해양과학기술원은 지난 1월, 2021년 해양수산연구개발사업의 일환으로 왕돌초에 ‘동해 첨단 해양과학기지 구축 사업’을 착수했다.
이는 이어도, 신안가거초, 옹진소청초에 이은 네 번째 종합해양과학기지로, 동해안에서 유일한 해양과학기지가 된다.
왕돌초는 후포항 동방 약 23㎞에 위치한 거대한 수중암초로서, 나팔고둥, 유착나무돌산호 등 해양보호생물과 다양한 어종의 서식지로 해양수산 자원의 보고이며, 아울러‘바닷 속 생태 비경 10선(2019년 해양수산부와 해양환경공단 선정)’, ‘연간 1만여 명의 다이버들이 방문하는 국내 3대 다이빙 포인트’ 등의 수식어를 통해서도 왕돌초의 생태·문화적 가치를 엿볼 수 있다.
연구용역 수행기관인 한국해양과학기술원(KIOST)은 이번 용역에서 왕돌초의 중간잠과 맞잠 사이에 동해 첨단 해양과학기지와 연계한 국가 해중공원벨트 조성을 위한 밑그림을 그리게 된다.
또한, 왕돌초 생태경관보전을 위한 해양보호구역 설정의 방향 모색, 동해 첨단 해양과학기지 연계 해중관광 프로그램 개발[왕돌초 구역(잠)별 사업구상], 후포 마리나항만을 활용한 요트 및 해상관광 프로그램 개발 등을 세부내용으로 해양환경의 보전과 해양신산업 발굴을 위한 연구를 수행하게 된다.
전찬걸 울진군수는 “향후 울진군의 씨마크(seamark)로 기능할 동해 첨단 해양과학기지와 연계한 새로운 해양관광산업 발굴과 해양환경의 보전을 통해 자연과 인간이 상생하고, 지속가능한 미래를 여는 해양 생태 관광의 청사진을 제시하겠다.”고 밝혔다.
