정부·여당은 22일 '화물연대 집단 운송거부사태 점검 긴급 당·정협의회'를 열고 안전운임제 3년 연장 추진을 결정했다. 성일종 국민의힘 정책위의장은 비공개 협의회 후 브리핑을 통해 "제도 도입 취지였던 교통안전 효과가 불분명해 일몰 연장을 통한 추가 검증 필요성이 있고, 최근 고유가 상황과 이해관계자 간 의견 등을 고려해 일몰 3년 연장을 추진하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.
다만, 성일종 위의장은 "화물연대가 (안전운임제) 추가 적용을 요구하고 있는 철강·유도차·자동차 등 다섯가지 품목은 상대적으로 소득 수준이 양호하고, 적용 시 국민들께 드리는 물류비 부담이 증가하기 때문에 확대하지 않기로 결정했다"고 전했다.
